How to Get to Playa de Muriola

Getting to Playa de Muriola is part of the adventure, and it is precisely this somewhat 'hidden' access that helps preserve its natural charm. We always recommend going by car, as direct public transport is limited. From Barrika or Plentzia, the road takes us along a winding path to a parking area, often informal and with limited spaces, located at the top of the cliffs. From there, the descent to the cove is via a steep path and stairs, which, while not excessively long, does require some agility and proper footwear. It is not a beach for strollers or people with reduced mobility, and it is important to keep this in mind to avoid surprises. The reward, however, is immense: at the end of the path, a breathtaking landscape opens before our eyes, connecting us directly with the purest essence of the Basque coast.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Muriola welcomes us with a combination of coarse sand and pebbles, especially evident at low tide. Don't expect the fine golden sand of other beaches, but it is precisely this mix that gives it a more authentic and wild character. It's the kind of ground that allows us to feel the force of nature under our feet, inviting us to explore every corner. The waters of the Cantabrian Sea here are, as usual on this coast, cool and of astonishing clarity, inviting a revitalizing swim that recharges our energy. The cove is protected by the imposing cliffs, which often provides us with more moderate waves than on more exposed beaches, ideal for swimming and enjoying the sea with some calm. Furthermore, at low tide, the rocky pools that are uncovered are a paradise for children (and adults) who enjoy exploring the fascinating marine life hidden among the rocks.

Services and Facilities

If we are looking for a beach with all the comforts, Playa de Muriola is not our best option. And indeed, its charm lies precisely in its authenticity and the absence of large infrastructure. We greatly value that it has managed to stay away from overcrowding and urbanization. Here we won't find beach bars, restaurants right on the sand, or umbrella and sunbed rental services. It is essential that we bring everything we need for our day, from water and food to sunscreen and towels. It is true that, during the peak summer season, it is common to have a lifeguard service to ensure the safety of swimmers, a detail we always appreciate. The parking, as already mentioned, is limited and somewhat informal at the top. Muriola's philosophy is 'less is more', and that is something we celebrate, as it allows us to truly connect with the natural surroundings and enjoy a purer experience on this beach in Barrika.

Best Time to Visit

For us, Playa de Muriola has charm at any time of the year, but if we want to fully enjoy it, there are key moments that maximize the experience according to our preferences:

Summer (June to September)

It is the ideal time for swimming, when temperatures are more pleasant and the sun invites you to lie on the sand. However, it is also the time of greatest influx, although Muriola never gets as crowded as other urban beaches in Bizkaia. The lifeguard service is usually active, which adds an extra layer of safety for those who decide to cool off in its waters.

Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November)

These seasons are perfect if we seek absolute tranquility and want to enjoy the landscape and walks along the cliffs. Temperatures are mild, the green of the vegetation is lush, and the sunsets are spectacular. It is ideal for photography and for those seeking a peaceful retreat, away from the hustle and bustle, to recharge their energy in the heart of nature.

Winter (December to March)

Although it is not swimming season, Muriola offers an impressive spectacle of marine bravado. It is a magnificent place to watch the waves crash powerfully against the cliffs and to enjoy the solitude and immensity of the Cantabrian Sea. Always, of course, with due precautions, as the sea in winter can be powerful and majestic in equal parts.
