Today we want to tell you about Playa de Laida, a natural jewel nestled in the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, in the municipality of Ibarrangelu. This beach, with its unique sandbar that stretches into the Mundaka estuary, is much more than just a sandy shore; it's a vibrant ecosystem, a meeting point for nature and sports lovers, and the perfect place to unwind with the family.

Laida captivates us with its ever-changing beauty, shaped by the tides that transform its landscape every day. Its calm and shallow waters make it an ideal destination for the little ones, while its exposure to the winds makes it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. From the moment we set foot on its sand, we feel the energy of Urdaibai, a protected environment that invites us to explore and respect its biodiversity. We are looking at one of the most charming and versatile beaches in Bizkaia.

How to Get to Playa de Laida

Getting to Playa de Laida is relatively straightforward, although in high season, as with many beaches in Bizkaia, it's advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot, both on the sand and in the parking lot. If we come by car, the most common route is to take the BI-2238, which will take us directly to the vicinity of the beach. The signage is usually clear, and the journey offers spectacular views of the estuary and its riverside villages.

We have a fairly large paid parking lot right next to the beach, which is a great advantage, although, as we've already mentioned, it can fill up quickly on the busiest summer days. For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines (Bizkaibus) connecting Ibarrangelu with Gernika-Lumo and other nearby points, facilitating access for those without their own vehicle. It's a comfortable and sustainable option for visiting the beach of Ibarrangelu.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Laida is distinguished by its fine, golden sand, a delight for the feet and perfect for building sandcastles. It's soft, clean sand that invites you to relax and enjoy the sun. The most notable feature of Laida is, without a doubt, its sandbar that stretches into the estuary, creating a very protected bathing area with exceptionally calm waters, ideal for children and those seeking a relaxing swim.

The waters of Laida are shallow, especially at low tide, making it a giant natural swimming pool. This characteristic, along with the warmth the water acquires on sunny days, is a major attraction. It's important to consider that, being at the mouth of an estuary, the water clarity can vary slightly, but it is generally suitable for bathing and is well monitored by lifeguards during the summer season. Laida is an example of how nature shapes the beaches of Bizkaia with uniqueness.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Laida is well-equipped to ensure a comfortable and safe day for all its visitors. We always value the presence of good services, and here it doesn't disappoint. Among the main ones, we highlight:

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, we have a team of lifeguards who watch over our safety, something essential, especially if we go with children.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for freshening up and maintaining hygiene after a day at the beach. The toilets are usually clean and well-maintained.
• Parking: As already mentioned, it has a nearby paid parking lot, which facilitates car access.
• Chiringuitos (Beach Bars): There are options for having a drink or a meal right on the beach, from a refreshment to a 'pintxo' or a more elaborate meal. They are perfect for recharging without moving too far from the sand.
• Equipment Rental: Given its popularity for water sports, we find rental stands for kayaks, paddle surf boards, and other equipment, allowing us to try new activities without needing to bring our own gear.
• Sports Area: The beach conditions are ideal for practicing various sports, both in the water and on the sand.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Laida will depend a lot on our preferences and the activities we want to do. We have been at different times of the year and have always found something special:

• Summer (June to September): This is the high season par excellence. If we're looking for sun, swimming, and the lively atmosphere of a family beach, summer is ideal. The services are in full operation (lifeguards, chiringuitos, equipment rental). However, it's also when it's most crowded, and parking can be a challenge.
• Spring and Autumn (April-May and September-October): For us, these seasons are perfect if we seek tranquility, to enjoy nature in its splendor, and to practice water sports with more space. Temperatures are usually pleasant for walking, and the waves are sometimes ideal for learning to surf or paddle surf. The Urdaibai Reserve shows itself in all its colorful splendor.
• Winter (November to March): Although it's not bathing season, Laida remains a magnificent place for walking, observing migratory birds in the estuary, and enjoying the peace of the surroundings. More experienced surfers also take advantage of the big waves that enter the estuary during this time.
