If we're coming from Bilbao, the capital of Bizkaia, the journey by car takes approximately 30-40 minutes, taking the BI-631. The road offers impressive views of the Basque coast, winding between cliffs and lush vegetation, which is already part of the experience. There is parking available near the beach, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

For those who prefer public transport, Bakio has Bizkaibus bus lines connecting to Bilbao (line A3518). It's a comfortable and sustainable option that allows us to forget about the car and fully enjoy the scenery. The bus stop is a short distance from the beach, facilitating access on foot. There is no train station directly in Bakio, so the bus is the main alternative to the car.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Playa de Bakio is, without a doubt, one of its most appreciated features. It is fine and of a beautiful golden color, very pleasant for walking barefoot or for children to build their sandcastles. Temperatures are warmer, the atmosphere is livelier, and all services are in full swing. However, it's also the busiest time, so the beach will be more crowded.

For surfers, the autumn and winter season can be even more attractive, as that's when the waves reach their greatest size and power. Although the water is colder and the weather is more variable, the experience of surfing the powerful waves of the Cantabrian Sea in a less crowded setting is unparalleled. Spring is also an excellent option, with longer days and pleasant temperatures, ideal for walks and outdoor activities before the summer crowds arrive.
