From our first visit, Playa de Tirant has been etched in our memory as one of those corners of Menorca that captivates you with its simplicity and natural beauty. Located on the island's north coast, within the municipality of Es Mercadal, this cove offers a perfect refuge for those seeking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the serenity of the Mediterranean. It's a beach that, despite its proximity to the Platges de Fornells development, retains an authentic and wild air that makes it special.

Upon arriving at Playa de Tirant, the first thing that strikes us is the hue of its waters, which range from a light turquoise blue at the shore to an intense indigo in the depths, always with an astonishing transparency that invites the first dip. The sand, fine and golden, stretches out gently, framed by low dunes and Mediterranean vegetation that give it a rustic, natural charm. This beach is ideal for families with young children, couples seeking intimacy, or any traveler yearning for the peace and beauty of a Menorcan cove. Its orientation and the shape of the bay protect it from most winds, almost always guaranteeing calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing without worries. Without a doubt, Playa de Tirant is a gem worth discovering on our route through the Balearic beaches.

How to Get to Playa de Tirant

Getting to Playa de Tirant is relatively straightforward, though it requires a small detour from the main roads. We always recommend renting a car in Menorca, as it gives us the freedom to explore every corner at our own pace. From Mahón or Ciutadella, the most direct route is to head towards Es Mercadal, a charming town in the center of the island. Once in Es Mercadal, we must take the Me-7 road towards Fornells. Before reaching the fishing village, we'll find a signposted turnoff towards Platges de Fornells and, subsequently, signs for Playa de Tirant.

The final stretch to the beach is paved and generally in good condition, facilitating access. As we approach, we'll notice the road leads to a parking area. While it's not an organized parking lot with barriers and fees, there's usually enough space to leave the car, especially outside the high season. During the months of July and August, when visitor numbers are highest, we might have to park a bit farther away and walk a few extra meters, but the short walk is always worth it for the views that await us. There are no public transport routes that go directly to the sand, so a private vehicle or a bicycle are the most viable options for enjoying the comfort of this Menorcan cove.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa de Tirant begins when you step onto its sand. It's a fine, soft sand with a golden tone that lights up under the Mediterranean sun. Its texture is so pleasant that it invites you to walk barefoot along the shore or simply lie on it to enjoy a sunbath. Unlike other coves in northern Menorca, which often have coarser sand or pebbles, Tirant stands out for this much-appreciated characteristic, especially for families with children.

But if the sand enchants us, the water of Playa de Tirant completely captivates us. Its waters are exceptionally crystal-clear, allowing us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. The slope for entering the sea is very gentle and gradual, making it a very safe beach for the little ones, who can play at the water's edge without risks. The bay in which it's located is well protected, which translates to practically non-existent waves most of the time. This creates a perfect natural pool for swimming calmly, snorkeling, or simply floating and letting yourself be carried by the calm. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is delightful and refreshing, ideal for relieving the summer heat. We love the feeling of peace that permeates when you immerse yourself in these waters, a true invitation to well-being on the Balearic beaches.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Tirant is a beach that, while it doesn't have massive tourist infrastructure, offers the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. As we've already mentioned, it has a parking area that, although unregulated, usually has capacity for visitors. It's important to remember that in high season it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

One point to highlight is the presence of nearby chiringuitos or restaurants. Just a few steps from the sand, we find establishments where we can enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a full meal with sea views. These places are perfect for replenishing energy and trying the local cuisine without straying too far from the beach. We note that, being a rather natural beach, it doesn't have showers or public toilets directly on the sand, although nearby establishments usually offer these services to their customers.

Regarding safety, during the high season months (typically from June to September), the beach has lifeguard services. This gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we're traveling with children or if we're not expert swimmers. The absence of large crowds and the more serene nature of the beach mean that, even with limited services, the experience is always pleasant and relaxed. If we're looking for umbrellas and sun loungers for rent, we might have to bring our own, as this is not a common service at this cove, which helps maintain its more pristine and authentic atmosphere.
