Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Formentera, we knew something special awaited us. And among its jewels, Playa de Llevant is undoubtedly one of the brightest. Located on the island's east coast, within the Ses Salines Natural Park, Llevant offers a beach experience that perfectly balances wild beauty with the comfort of some essential services. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the blue of the sea merges with the immaculate white of the sand, creating a landscape that invites total disconnection.
This beach, often considered the twin sister of the famous Illetes due to its proximity and landscape similarity, has, however, its own personality. Although it shares the same crystal-clear waters and fine sand, Llevant tends to be a bit quieter, offering more space to spread out your towel and enjoy the sun without excessive crowds, even in high season. It's a favorite destination for those looking for a beach in Formentera where nature is the protagonist and the sound of the waves is the only background music.
We consider it a true treasure of the Balearic beaches, a corner where the magic of Formentera manifests in every grain of sand and every wave that caresses the shore. Get ready to immerse yourself in the serenity and beauty of a place that, we are sure, will be etched in your memory long after your vacation ends.
How to Get to Playa de Llevant
Getting to Playa de Llevant is part of the Formentera adventure, an island only accessible by ferry from Ibiza. Once at the port of La Savina in Formentera, we have several options to get around the island and reach this wonderful beach. The most popular and recommended way is to rent a scooter or a bicycle. Formentera is a small and relatively flat island, making it ideal for exploring on two wheels, feeling the sea breeze and enjoying the landscape.
From La Savina, we'll take the main road towards Sant Francesc Xavier and then follow the signs to Illetes and Llevant. Both beaches are located on the same peninsula, at the northern tip of the island, and share access through the Ses Salines Natural Park. It's important to know that access to this park is regulated, and during the high season (generally from May to October), a small entry fee is charged for motor vehicles (cars and scooters) to preserve the environment. Bicycles and pedestrians have free access, which encourages more sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility.
Once inside the park, the road forks, and we must follow the signs to Playa de Llevant. There are several designated parking areas, although in July and August they can fill up quickly. Our advice is to arrive early, especially if you visit the island in peak season. It's also an excellent idea to consider public transport, as there are buses connecting La Savina with the areas near the beaches, although the flexibility of a scooter or bike is unmatched. The experience of traveling the roads surrounded by dunes and vegetation, with the sea on both sides, is, in itself, a delight that prepares us for the beauty that awaits.
The Sand and the Water
If there's something that defines Playa de Llevant and the beaches of Formentera in general, it's the unparalleled quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. The sand of Llevant is pure white, so fine it feels like flour under our feet, and is composed of tiny fragments of shells and corals that give it that characteristic color. Walking barefoot on it is a true delight, a feeling of softness that invites relaxation and forgetting the outside world. Its expanse allows us to always find a spot where we feel comfortable, even on the busiest days.
But it's the water that truly takes our breath away. The waters of Llevant are a spectacle of nature: crystal clear, of an intense turquoise color that varies between emerald and aquamarine tones, and with exceptional visibility. This clarity is largely due to the presence of the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadow, an endemic Mediterranean marine plant that acts as a natural filter, purifying the water and contributing to the richness of underwater biodiversity. Posidonia is, in fact, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its conservation is vital for the Balearic marine ecosystem.
The entry into the sea at Playa de Llevant is gentle and gradual, making it ideal for all visitors, especially families with young children. We can walk several meters without the water getting too deep, allowing for safe and pleasant swimming. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is perfect for cooling off and enjoying long dips. We've spent hours simply floating in its calm waters, watching the small fish swimming near the shore and marveling at the shades of blue stretching to the horizon. It's a complete sensory experience, where sight, touch, and tranquility combine to create unforgettable moments.
Services and Facilities
Despite its natural ambiance and location within a protected park, Playa de Llevant has a series of services that make our visit more comfortable without detracting from its charm. Although it's not a beach with massive infrastructure, we do find the essentials for enjoying a perfect day under the Formentera sun.
One of the most valued services are the chiringuitos dotted along the beach. Places like Es Ministre or Tanga are legendary in the area, offering not only refreshments and cocktails but also delicious Mediterranean food, with a special emphasis on
