Introduction
We venture into one of those landscapes that take our breath away and transport us to another era: Playa de Cales Coves, in the municipality of Alaior, Menorca. This is not your typical beach destination; it's an experience, a journey through time, and an intimate encounter with the most pristine nature and the millennia-old history of the Balearic beaches. Here, the turquoise blue of its waters blends with the ochre of cliffs that jealously guard over a hundred prehistoric caves, remnants of a Talayotic past that whispers stories of ancient inhabitants.
When we talk about Playa de Cales Coves, we're not just referring to a place to sunbathe or swim, but to a natural and archaeological sanctuary. It's a complex of two small coves, Platja Gran and Platja Petita, sheltered by imposing rock walls that create a cove of breathtaking beauty. Its access, while not complicated, requires a small effort that is richly rewarded upon discovering this hidden paradise, a place where time seems to stand still and the connection with the surroundings is absolute. It is, without a doubt, one of the most precious jewels of the Alaior beach and the entire island of Menorca.
How to Get to Playa de Cales Coves
Getting to Playa de Cales Coves is part of the adventure and invites us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle. Don't expect to drive directly onto the sand, and that's precisely what contributes to its wild charm. From Alaior, we take the road towards Cala en Porter. Before reaching this urbanization, we'll find a well-signposted turnoff towards Cales Coves.
Once we take this turnoff, we'll travel along a rural road, mostly paved, until we reach an area where an informal parking area is usually set up. This parking is on dirt and can fill up in high season, so we recommend arriving early if visiting in July or August. From here, access to the coves is on foot, via a path that gently descends through pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation. The walk takes about 15-20 minutes, and although the path is well-marked, it's advisable to wear comfortable footwear suitable for walking on uneven terrain. The reward at the end of the journey is simply spectacular.
The Sand and Water
Upon arriving at Playa de Cales Coves, we find two small stretches of sand, predominantly fine and of a light golden hue, inviting us to take off our shoes and feel the earth under our feet. The coves, although modest in size, offer enough space to spread out our towel and enjoy the Menorcan sun. However, what truly captivates us here is the quality of the water.
The waters of Cales Coves are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from emerald green in the shallower areas to an intense blue in the open sea. The cove is very sheltered from the winds, which ensures its waters are almost always calm and peaceful, ideal for bathing and, above all, for snorkeling. Beneath the surface, a vibrant underwater world awaits, with rocks that serve as home to colorful fish and meadows of Posidonia oceanica, indicative of the excellent ecological health of this place. The type of bottom at the beach is mainly sandy, but as we venture further out or explore the sides, we'll find rocky areas that add interest to the underwater experience.
Services and Facilities
For those looking for a beach with all the comforts, Playa de Cales Coves is not the right place. And its greatest charm lies precisely in its almost virgin state and the absence of development. Here, you won't find chiringuitos (beach bars) right on the sand, nor lifeguards on duty, nor showers to rinse off the salt, nor sunbed and umbrella rental services. It's a beach for lovers of the natural, of authenticity, and of total disconnection.
This means we must be prepared and bring with us everything necessary for our beach day: plenty of water, some food, sunscreen, a towel, and of course, a bag to take all our trash with us. The philosophy here is to 'leave the place as we found it', or even better. The only 'service' we could mention is the informal parking we referred to earlier, which allows us to leave the car at a reasonable distance before starting the descent on foot. It's a place to enjoy nature in its purest state, without distractions or artifice.
Best Time to Visit
The choice of when to visit Playa de Cales Coves can make a difference in our experience. If we seek maximum tranquility and to enjoy the place with fewer people, our recommendation is to opt for late spring (May and early June) or early autumn (September and early October). During these months, the climate in Menorca is delightful, with pleasant temperatures inviting for bathing and walking, and nature is in full splendor, with an explosion of colors and scents.
If, on the other hand, our visit coincides with the peak summer months (July and August), we should know the beach will be busier. Even so, its more 'wild' character and foot access mean it never gets as crowded as other more accessible beaches. During this time, we strongly recommend arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot in the parking and enjoy the cove in its calmest moments. The sunsets from the cliffs of Cales Coves are also a spectacle worth admiring, regardless of the time of year.
