Introduction

If there's one spot on the northeast coast of Mallorca that has stolen our hearts, it is, without a doubt, Cala Gat beach. Located in the municipality of Capdepera, very close to the vibrant hub of Cala Ratjada, this small jewel is the epitome of what we look for when we think of a Balearic cove: calm waters, fine sand, and a natural setting that invites pure delight. It's not a huge beach, one of those that stretch for kilometres, but a cute and secluded little cove that offers a more intimate and leisurely experience.

Upon arriving at Cala Gat, the first impression is always the same: a feeling of 'eureka!', of having found that special place one keeps secret. Its waters, with shades ranging from turquoise to the deepest blue, are so transparent they invite you to dive in immediately, while the sand, of a soft gold and pleasant to the touch, encourages us to take off our shoes and simply feel the earth under our feet. It's a perfect destination for those seeking to escape the bustle of the more crowded beaches, without giving up certain services that make the stay more comfortable. It is, in short, one of those Balearic beaches that stay etched in your memory.

How to get to Cala Gat

Getting to Cala Gat beach is relatively simple, although it requires a short walk that, in our opinion, contributes to its charm and keeps it slightly removed from the crowds. If we come by car, the most common way is to head towards Cala Ratjada, the nearest and best-known tourist hub. Once there, we follow the signs towards the lighthouse area or 'Faro de Capdepera'.

Access by car and parking

We can find several parking areas around Cala Ratjada. There is public parking, often paid, in the streets near the port and at the start of the path leading to the cove. It's advisable to arrive early, especially in high season (July and August), as spaces tend to fill up quickly. From the nearest car park, a brief and pleasant 5 to 10-minute walk awaits us along a well-signposted path that borders the coast and already offers the first spectacular views of the Mediterranean. It's a walk suitable for most people, including families with young children, although it is not adapted for wheelchairs due to some irregularities in the terrain.

Access on foot or by public transport

If we are staying in Cala Ratjada, one of the best options is to go on foot. The walk from the centre of Cala Ratjada or from Son Moll beach is very pleasant, bordering the coast and enjoying the landscape. Furthermore, there are bus lines connecting Cala Ratjada with other points in Mallorca, although to get directly to Cala Gat we will always have to do that final stretch on foot. There is no bus stop right at the cove, so the most practical option is to get to Cala Ratjada and from there, continue walking. We always recommend this walk, as it allows us to anticipate the beauty of the destination and disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle before setting foot on the sand.

The sand and the water

Cala Gat beach is a true delight for the senses, and much of its charm lies in the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. When we talk about the sand of Cala Gat, we are referring to fine sand, of a light golden colour that shines under the Mallorcan sun. It is incredibly soft to the touch, making it perfect for lying down and relaxing, or for the little ones to play and build castles without worrying about annoying pebbles. Its texture is so pleasant that many of us prefer to walk barefoot on it, enjoying every step.

As for the water, it is certainly one of the great attractions of this cove. Its turquoise and emerald hues are hypnotic, and its transparency is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several metres deep. It is clean, fresh water and, most importantly, very calm. Sheltered by small cliffs and rock formations, Cala Gat is usually protected from strong currents and waves, making it an idyllic place for swimming and enjoying a relaxing dip. The water temperature is generally pleasant from late spring until well into autumn, inviting long swims.

Marine life and the seabed

The seabed of Cala Gat is predominantly sandy, which contributes to the clarity of the water. However, on the sides and near the rocks, we find areas where rock and some meadows of Posidonia oceanica (a vital marine plant for the Mediterranean ecosystem) are present. These rocky and Posidonia areas are home to a variety of marine life, making Cala Gat an excellent spot for snorkelling. We can observe small fish, crabs and other marine creatures swimming among the rocks, creating a small natural aquarium that fascinates both children and adults. The combination of fine sand and an interesting seabed makes this cove versatile and attractive to different types of visitors.
