How to get to Cala d'Or
Getting to Cala d'Or is relatively easy, especially if you fly into Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), the main entry point to the island. From there, we have several options to get to our beach destination.
The most comfortable and flexible way to get there is, without a doubt, to rent a car directly at the airport. The road journey is approximately 60 kilometres and usually takes around 50-60 minutes, depending on traffic. The main route will take us along the Ma-19 towards Santanyí, and then we'll follow the signs to Cala d'Or. Having a vehicle will give us the freedom to explore not only the different coves in the area, but also the charming inland towns and landscapes of Mallorca, something we always highly recommend.
If you prefer not to drive, there are private transfer services or taxis available at the airport, although they can be a bit more expensive. Another more economical option is public transport. From the airport, you can take a bus (line A1) to the Palma Intermodal Station and, from there, connect with TIB (Transport de les Illes Balears) line 501 which will take you directly to Cala d'Or. The buses are modern and comfortable, and the trip will allow you to enjoy the views. However, the total journey time will be longer, potentially exceeding two hours, with waits and transfers.
Once in Cala d'Or, getting around between the different coves and the town centre is very easy. We can walk, use the 'tourist train' that runs through the area, or even local taxis. For those looking for a more active experience, renting bicycles is an excellent alternative for getting around the town and its surroundings, taking advantage of the tranquillity of its streets and the available bike lanes.
The sand and the water
When we talk about Cala d'Or, we can't help but marvel at the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. The main characteristic of the coves in this area is their fine sand of a light golden hue, which invites you to lie down and relax under the sun. Unlike other rockier beaches on the island, here the comfort of the sand is a real pleasure for the feet and for the little ones, who will be able to build sandcastles without difficulty.
But if there's one thing we love about Cala d'Or, it's undoubtedly the incredible transparency and shades of its waters. They are of an intense, almost unreal turquoise blue, which contrasts wonderfully with the green of the vegetation surrounding the coves. The water quality is exceptional, as reflected by the presence of the Blue Flag at several of its coves, a distinction that certifies excellence in water quality, safety and services. We are faced with a true bathing paradise.
The coves of Cala d'Or are usually quite sheltered, with calm and shallow waters at the shore, making them an ideal place for families with children. The absence of strong currents and the underwater visibility make these waters perfect for snorkelling too, allowing us to observe the rich marine life that inhabits their seabeds. The feeling when diving in is one of revitalising freshness, a true invitation to disconnect and enjoy the essence of the Mediterranean. Every dip is an experience of pure pleasure and connection with nature.
Services and facilities
One of the great advantages of Cala d'Or as a tourist destination is the excellent provision of services and facilities we find in its coves and in the urban centre itself. This makes our stay comfortable and worry-free, allowing us to fully enjoy the beach experience.
At most of the main coves, such as Cala Gran, Cala Ferrera or Cala Esmeralda, we have a wide range of essential services. For our comfort, we find showers to rinse off the salt and sand after bathing, as well as clean and accessible toilets/WCs. Safety is a priority, so we have lifeguards watching over the beaches during the high season, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we are travelling with children.
For those looking for a day in the sun with all the comforts, most coves offer sunbed and umbrella rental service, which saves us from carrying our own equipment. Furthermore, access to the pl
