Its artificial origin, conceived in the nineties, far from detracting from its charm, gives it a unique personality, making it a benchmark for leisure and relaxation on the Cantabrian coast.

For us, visiting Playa de Poniente means immersing ourselves in an atmosphere of joy and comfort. Its calm waters, golden sand, and the wide range of services it offers make it the preferred destination for families, groups of friends, and anyone looking for a beach day without complications, with the city just a step away. How to Get to Playa de Poniente

Getting to Playa de Poniente is extremely simple, given its central location in Gijón. We often say it's a beach you can reach 'walking', 'cycling', or 'driving' with equal ease. It is located west of the marina, making it very accessible from any point in the city.

By Car

If we choose the car, the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico) is the main access route to Gijón. Once in the city, signs towards the center and the marina will guide us directly. Finding parking can be a challenge in high season, but there are several nearby underground car parks, such as the one at the Poniente Shopping Center or the one at the marina itself, which make the task much easier. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

By Public Transport

The urban bus network (EMTUSA) in Gijón is excellent. Numerous lines have stops just a few minutes' walk from the beach. For example, lines 1, 4, 6, 12, 16, 20, and 25 are some of those that pass through the vicinity. It is a very comfortable option if we are staying in Gijón or nearby.

On Foot or by Bicycle

For us, one of the best ways to approach Playa de Poniente is on foot or by bicycle. The Gijón promenade is a delight, and the beach is perfectly integrated into it. It's a flat and pleasant walk, ideal for enjoying the atmosphere and the views before taking a dip.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Poniente, the sand and water are two of its greatest attractions. The sand is fine and a pleasant golden color, very comfortable for walking barefoot or for the little ones to play building sandcastles. Being an artificial beach, its composition has been carefully selected to offer the best experience, and it is maintained in excellent condition thanks to the good work of the city council. It is a pleasure to lay a towel on this sand and feel its softness under our feet.

As for the water, it is one of its strong points, especially for families. The waters of Playa de Poniente are notably calm, protected by the orientation of the beach and the configuration of the bay. This means the waves are usually very gentle or non-existent, making it an exceptionally safe place for children and the elderly to swim. The water quality is consistently good, reflected in its regular awarding of the Blue Flag, a distinction that gives us great peace of mind. The temperature, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, is refreshing but pleasant in the summer months, perfect for relieving the heat and revitalizing us.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Poniente is an example of how an urban beach can offer a complete experience thanks to its excellent range of services and facilities. We always appreciate having everything we need close at hand, and here, that is a reality:

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a well-equipped and signposted lifeguard service, which provides us with great security. The surveillance posts are visible and the staff is very professional.
• Showers and Foot Washers: Essential after a swim in the sea, the showers and foot washers are distributed along the beach, allowing us to comfortably remove sand and salt.
• Toilets/WCs: There are clean and well-maintained public toilets, a detail that is always appreciated, especially if we are with children.
• Full Accessibility: This is one of the most notable points of Playa de Poniente. It has ramps and wooden walkways that facilitate access to the sand and even to the water's edge. Furthermore, it has amphibious chairs and support staff in high season for people with reduced mobility, making it a truly inclusive beach. We applaud this effort to make the sea accessible to everyone.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the promenade that borders the beach, we find several chiringuitos and establishments where we can have a cool drink, a snack, or even enjoy a full meal with sea views. It's perfect for those moments when we fancy an ice cream, a soft drink, or a coffee.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: In the summer months, it is possible to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers, which saves us from carrying our own equipment and allows us to relax comfortably under the Asturian sun.
• Children's Play Area: The beach has a children's play area in the sand, a paradise for the little ones, where they can have fun and socialize while the adults enjoy a well-deserved rest.
