Introduction
From the moment we set foot on the sand of Playa de Peñarronda, we knew we were in a special place. It's not just another beach on the wonderful Asturian coast; it's a true Natural Monument, a corner where nature has taken great care to create a postcard-perfect landscape. Strategically located between the charming municipalities of Castropol and Tapia de Casariego, this beach welcomes us with a wide expanse of fine, golden sand, bathed by waters that often gift us with perfect waves. It's a destination that perfectly combines the wild beauty of the Cantabrian Sea with the comfort of services designed for the enjoyment of all visitors.
What first catches our attention is, without a doubt, the iconic rock that gives it its name: the 'Peña' or 'Peñarronda', a sea-hollowed rock formation that rises majestically in the center of the cove, visually dividing it and creating a dramatic backdrop for our photos. Its presence not only adds a distinctive element to the landscape but also invites us to explore its surroundings when the tide is low. For us, Playa de Peñarronda represents the essence of Asturian beaches: natural beauty, quality services, and an atmosphere that invites both relaxation and adventure. It's a place where time seems to stand still, allowing us to disconnect and fully immerse ourselves in the coastal experience.
How to Get to Playa de Peñarronda
Getting to Playa de Peñarronda is relatively straightforward, which is a great advantage when planning our visit. Generally, the most convenient access is by car, as the beach has a large parking area that makes arrival much easier, especially in the summer months. When we exit the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico), we take the exit towards Tapia de Casariego or Castropol, depending on our direction of origin. Once on the local road, the signage for 'Playa de Peñarronda' is clear and guides us without any problems to the destination.
Access by Car
- From the west (Galicia): If we are coming from the western part, for example, from Ribadeo, we will take the A-8 towards Oviedo. The exit for Tapia de Casariego/Castropol will lead us directly to the secondary roads that go to the beach. The journey is short and picturesque, offering the first glimpses of the beautiful Asturian coastline.
- From the east (Central Asturias): If our starting point is Oviedo or Gijón, we will follow the A-8 towards Galicia. Again, the exit for Tapia de Casariego/Castropol is key. It's important to pay attention to the signs, as the beach is located on a stretch of coast that, although well-connected, requires leaving the main motorway.
Access by Public Transport or on Foot
Although the car is the most popular option, it is also possible to reach Playa de Peñarronda by public transport, albeit with less frequency and perhaps requiring some walking. There are bus lines connecting Castropol and Tapia de Casariego with other towns, and from these villages, we could consider a taxi or, for the more adventurous, a pleasant walk along the coastal trails. We always recommend checking bus schedules in advance if this is our option. If we are staying in the surrounding area, a bicycle or a walk can be an excellent way to enjoy the landscape before reaching the sand.
The Sand and the Water
When we talk about Playa de Peñarronda, one of the first details that comes to mind is its exquisite sand. It is a fine, golden sand, the kind that slips between your fingers with an unmatched softness and invites you to walk barefoot for hours. It's the perfect sand for building castles, for laying out our towel and simply relaxing in the sun, or for enjoying a game of paddle ball. Its expanse is considerable, allowing us to always find a quiet spot, even on the busiest summer days. We love how the sun reflects off it, creating a special shine that enhances the beauty of the surroundings.
The type of ground on the beach is predominantly sand, which makes it very comfortable and safe for walking and for children to play. However, at the ends and, of course, around the famous 'Peñarronda', we find some rocky areas. These rocks, polished by the constant pounding of the waves, add a touch of character to the landscape and are perfect for exploring small pools when the tide goes out, discovering the marine life hidden within. We always advise bringing water shoes if our intention is to explore these rocky areas, to avoid slips or minor cuts.
The waters of Playa de Peñarronda are, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, cool and revitalizing. They usually have excellent quality, which is confirmed by the constant presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that gives us peace of mind about the cleanliness and services of the beach. The water's clarity varies depending on sea conditions, but it is generally very clear, allowing us to see the bottom in shallower areas. It's a pleasure to immerse ourselves in them, whether for a refreshing swim or to practice some water sport.
