Today we want to tell you about Playa de las Cámaras, a cove that, despite its modest size, perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Asturian coastline and the life of one of its most emblematic fishing villages. It's not a beach of vast expanses or wild waves, but an intimate and welcoming corner that invites us to stop time and enjoy the simplicity of a good swim.

Strategically located in the urban heart of Llanes, right next to the harbour and a stone's throw from the historic centre, Playa de las Cámaras presents itself as an oasis of tranquility and convenience. It's the ideal place for those looking to combine a beach experience with exploring a vibrant town, its history-filled streets, its gastronomy, and its lively atmosphere. We love its family-friendly character and its ability to offer a serene respite, even in the height of summer when the other larger beaches in the area are bustling with activity. It is, without a doubt, a must-stop on our route along the beaches of Asturias.

How to get to Playa de las Cámaras

Getting to Playa de las Cámaras is, in itself, part of its charm and ease. Being integrated into the urban centre of Llanes, its access is incredibly simple and comfortable, making it a fantastic option for all types of visitors.

By car

If we're coming from outside Llanes, the most common way to arrive is via the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico). We'll take the exit towards Llanes and, once in the town, follow the signs to the centre or the harbour. The beach is located right next to the marina. Although it doesn't have its own exclusive car park right on the sand, Llanes has several public parking areas nearby. We can find parking on the streets near the harbour or in the designated car parks in the centre of the town, no more than a five or ten-minute walk from the beach. It's important to remember that in high season, finding a spot can be a challenge, so we recommend arriving early or considering other options.

On foot or by bicycle

For those already staying in Llanes or who simply want to enjoy a walk, Playa de las Cámaras is perfectly accessible on foot. In fact, much of its charm lies in being able to walk there from any point in the town, traversing its picturesque streets or strolling along the promenade. From the centre of Llanes, just head towards the marina, and the beach will reveal itself before us. It's a very pleasant walk that requires no great effort and allows us to immerse ourselves in the local atmosphere before stepping onto the sand. If we're cycling enthusiasts, it's also a viable option, although once in the centre of Llanes, it's preferable to park the bike and continue on foot through the pedestrian area.

Public transport

Llanes is well-connected by bus, with lines connecting it to other Asturian towns and major cities. If we arrive by bus, Llanes station is a reasonable distance from the centre, from where we can walk to the beach. Although there isn't a specific urban bus that drops us right on the sand of Las Cámaras, Llanes's good connections as a regional hub facilitate access from almost any point in the Principality. This ease of access, especially on foot from the town, is one of the great advantages of this small coastal gem.

The sand and the water

Playa de las Cámaras is a microcosm of Asturian coastal beauty, where the sand and water play a fundamental role in its appeal. When stepping onto this cove, the first thing we notice is the quality of its sand, a detail that, for us, makes all the difference in any beach experience.

Type of sand

We are met with fine, golden sand, very pleasant to the touch. It's the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot, lie down comfortably to sunbathe, or build sandcastles with the little ones. Its soft, uniform texture makes it a perfect bed for relaxation and play. Unlike other Asturian beaches that may have a mix of sand and pebbles, Las Cámaras is predominantly pure sand, contributing to an unparalleled feeling of cleanliness and comfort. Furthermore, being an urban beach, its maintenance and cleanliness are usually excellent, guaranteeing we always find it in optimal condition for our enjoyment.

Water quality and characteristics

The waters of Playa de las Cámaras are, in general, transparent and crystalline, reflecting the characteristic greenish and bluish tones of the Cantabrian Sea. Being a very sheltered cove, protected by the breakwaters of Llanes harbour and the surrounding rock formations, the waves are usually very gentle, almost non-existent. This creates a kind of natural swimming pool, ideal for safe and tranquil bathing. The calmness of its waters makes it especially attractive for families with young children, who can splash and play without worry, and for those who simply wish to enjoy a relaxing swim without the wildness of the open sea.

The water temperature, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, is cool but very refreshing on hot summer days. For us, plunging into these waters is a real energy boost. The clarity of the water also allows us to observe the seabed in the shallower areas; while it's not a place for deep diving, it does invite exploration with a mask and snorkel to see the small life hidden among the rocks and sand.
