Introduction
We venture into the heart of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park to discover one of its most emblematic and captivating corners: Playa de los Escullos. Located in the municipality of Níjar, in the province of Almería, this beach is much more than just a sandy stretch; it's a natural canvas where volcanic geology merges with the serenity of the Mediterranean. From the very first moment, we'll be enveloped in an atmosphere of calm and awe, inviting us to disconnect and immerse ourselves completely in its beauty.
Playa de los Escullos offers us a landscape that seems from another world. Flanked by majestic volcanic rock formations and crowned by the remains of the historic Castillo de San Felipe, this cove gifts us breathtaking panoramic views. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the song of birds are the only soundtrack, and where every sunset paints the sky with magical hues. Without a doubt, it's one of those destinations that stays etched in memory forever.
How to Get to Playa de los Escullos
Getting to Playa de los Escullos is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. If we're coming from Almería city, the most common route is to take the A-7 motorway towards Murcia, then turn off towards San José via the AL-3108. From San José, we'll follow the signs to Rodalquilar and then to Los Escullos. The journey immerses us in the arid and spectacular landscapes of the Natural Park, with curves revealing hidden coves and impressive rock formations at every turn.
If we opt for a more direct route from areas like Níjar or Campohermoso, we can access via the AL-4200, which will take us directly to the small hamlet of Los Escullos. Once there, the beach is easily identifiable. Regarding parking, we'll find designated areas, often unpaved, where we can leave our vehicle. During the summer months, especially in July and August, these areas can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. It's important to remember that we are in a natural park, so we must be respectful of the environment and park only in permitted areas, avoiding damage to the surrounding flora and fauna.
The Sand and Water
Upon stepping onto Playa de los Escullos, we'll realize its charm lies in its authenticity. Don't expect uniform fine golden sand, but rather a fascinating mix of mixed sand with small pebbles and gravel polished by the sea. This type of ground, sometimes described as 'volcanic sand' due to its darker tone in some areas, gives it a unique and wild character, very much in keeping with the Cabo de Gata environment. It's a different tactile experience that connects us more with the untamed nature of the area. Despite the pebbles, it's comfortable for walking and spreading out our towel, although water sandals can be useful for the more sensitive.
The waters of Playa de los Escullos are, without exaggeration, a marvel. We encounter a crystal-clear sea, with turquoise and deep blue hues, that irresistibly invites us for a swim. The natural protection provided by the cliffs and the shape of the cove make its waters generally very calm, with little wave action, making it a safe and pleasant place for swimming, even for the little ones. Underwater visibility is excellent, making it perfect for snorkeling and diving, allowing us to discover a fascinating underwater world full of marine life. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, ideal for cooling off and enjoying long dips.
Services and Facilities
Although Playa de los Escullos retains a natural and semi-wild feel, it has some essential services that make our stay more comfortable, always in harmony with the Natural Park regulations. In high season, it's common to find lifeguard services, which provides us with additional peace of mind knowing professionals are watching over our safety in the water. This service is crucial, especially if we visit the beach with children or if we are not expert swimmers.
One of the most popular attractions, especially during the summer months, are the chiringuitos set up near the beach. These establishments offer us the chance to enjoy a refreshing drink, an ice cream, or even a light meal with sea views. They are the perfect place to take shelter from the midday sun or to enjoy an unforgettable sunset. Although we won't find the profusion of services of urban beaches (like umbrella and sunbed rentals or public showers on every corner), the presence of these chiringuitos, along with the nearby parking, are enough to guarantee a very pleasant beach day in a unique natural setting. It's important to remember to bring everything we need, such as sunscreen, extra water, and our own shade if desired, as the infrastructure is limited to preserve the character of the place.
Best Time to Visit
For us, the best time to visit Playa de los Escullos and, in general, Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, is spring (April, May, early June) and autumn (September, October). During these months, the weather is exceptionally pleasant, with mild temperatures inviting for both swimming and excursions. The influx of tourists is lower than in peak summer, allowing us to enjoy the beach with a tranquility and space that are harder to find in August. The waters remain warm in autumn and begin to warm up in spring, ideal for swimming.
Summer (July and August) is also a time
