How to Get to Playa de Agua Amarga
Getting to Playa de Agua Amarga is an adventure in itself, a route that gradually immerses us in the arid and wild beauty of Cabo de Gata. From the city of Almería, the journey is relatively simple and takes us through landscapes that already hint at what we will find. We usually take the A-7 motorway towards Murcia and, after a few kilometers, we turn off onto the N-340a or, further on, onto one of the regional roads that go into the Natural Park. The signage towards Agua Amarga is clear, which makes arrival quite easy, even for first-time visitors.
Road Access
If we come from the west, for example, from Granada or Málaga, the A-7 is our best ally until we reach the area of Níjar or Carboneras, where we will take the indicated exits. For those arriving from the east, such as Murcia or Cartagena, the route will also take us along the A-7 to the Carboneras exit and then along the AL-5106, a road that winds between coves and cliffs, offering us spectacular views. It's a road that, although with some curves, is perfectly passable and is part of the experience. We love driving on these secondary roads, as they allow us to appreciate the native flora and fauna, as well as the small villages that dot the landscape.
Parking
Once we arrive in the village of Agua Amarga, parking can be a point to consider, especially during the high season months, like July and August. The village has regulated parking zones, often paid, which make it easy for us to leave the car near the beach. We always recommend arriving early, especially if we plan to spend the whole day, to secure a good spot. There is a fairly large public parking lot at the entrance to the village, from where we can walk comfortably to the beach and the center. During the low season, finding parking is much easier and free in many areas. It's important to respect the signs and not park in prohibited areas, as we are in a protected Natural Park and regulations are strictly enforced.
The Sand and the Water
When we step onto Playa de Agua Amarga, the first thing that catches our attention is the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. It's a combination that instantly invites us to take off our sandals and feel direct contact with nature. The sand here is fine, although with a slightly darker tone and mixed with small gravel or pebbles in some areas, which gives it a very particular and natural character. It's not the white Caribbean sand, but sand with personality, reflecting the geological richness of Cabo de Gata. We love how it feels underfoot, neither too loose nor too compact, perfect for walking barefoot along the shore.
Water Quality
But if there's something that truly captivates us about this beach, it's the quality and color of its waters. They are incredibly crystal clear, with shades ranging from emerald green near the shore to a deep blue beyond the bathing area. The bay in which Agua Amarga is located protects it from the strongest currents, resulting in generally very calm and temperate waters, ideal for swimming. We always say that diving into these waters is like entering a natural pool, where visibility is excellent and allows us to easily observe marine life. This characteristic makes it an ideal place for all ages, especially for the little ones, who can enjoy it safely.
The Shore Experience
The shore of Playa de Agua Amarga is gentle and with a gradual slope, which makes entering the water easy. We don't find large rocks or sudden drops, making access very comfortable. We love how the sun reflects on the water's surface, creating sparkles that look like diamonds. Furthermore, being a semi-urban beach, cleanliness is a priority, and the care in maintaining the sandy area is noticeable. Walking along the shore at dawn...
