When we talk about Almería beaches, it's impossible not to think of the uniqueness of Cabo de Gata, and Cala del Plomo is a clear example of this. Don't expect large infrastructure or dazzling service offerings; its charm lies precisely in its authenticity and the feeling of discovering an almost private corner. Here, the protagonist is nature in its purest state, inviting us to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the landscape.

How to get to Cala del Plomo

Getting to Cala del Plomo is part of the adventure and, at the same time, the reason for its well-preserved essence. It is located in the municipality of Níjar, within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. To access it, we usually go by car, taking a turnoff from the main road connecting Agua Amarga and Las Negras, or from the road coming from Fernán Pérez.

Once we take the turnoff, we will find a dirt track, sometimes in good condition, other times with some potholes, winding through the semi-arid landscape characteristic of the area. This final stretch prepares us for what we are going to find: a remote place, where asphalt has not managed to spoil the charm. At the end of the track, we will find an area to park the car, not an organized parking lot, but a natural space enabled by continuous use. From there, a short walk will take us directly to the sand. It is important to drive carefully and respect the environment at all times.

The sand and the water

The sand of Cala del Plomo is peculiar and contributes to its wild character. Don't expect the typical fine, golden sand; here we find a mixture of coarse sand and small pebbles, in dark and reddish tones, giving it a very natural and authentic appearance. This composition keeps the water incredibly clear, as sediments are not easily stirred up.

The transparency of the water

And speaking of the water, it's simply spectacular! The waters of Cala del Plomo are of astonishing transparency, with shades ranging from the most vibrant turquoise to deep blue. They are calm waters, protected by the rocky formations that flank it, making them ideal for bathing. The absence of large waves and the underwater visibility make it a paradise for snorkeling lovers. Diving here is like entering a natural aquarium, where we can observe the rich marine life of the Mediterranean.

Services and facilities

If you are looking for a beach with all the comforts, Cala del Plomo may not be your first choice, and that is precisely where its charm lies. This cove, due to its pristine nature within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, lacks most of the services we find in more urbanized beaches. There are no beach bars (chiringuitos), no showers, no public toilets, no lifeguard service, and no umbrella and sunbed rentals.

This means that if we decide to visit it, we must go prepared. It is essential to bring everything we need with us: plenty of water, some food or a picnic, an umbrella if we want to protect ourselves from the sun, and everything we might need to spend the day. The only 'service' we can consider is the informal parking area at the end of the dirt track. This lack of infrastructure is, for many, an advantage, as it helps preserve the natural beauty and tranquility of the place. It invites us to reconnect with the essentials and enjoy the beach in its purest state.

Best time to visit

The choice of the best time to visit Cala del Plomo will largely depend on what we are looking for in our experience. If our main goal is to enjoy tranquility and solitude, the months of spring (April, May, early June) and autumn (September, October) are, without a doubt, the most recommended. During these seasons, the climate in Níjar and throughout the province of Almería is mild and pleasant, with perfect temperatures for walking, sunbathing, and enjoying the waters without the summer crowds. The nature of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is also at its peak, with more lush flora.

If, on the other hand, what we seek is the pleasure of a good swim and summer heat, the months of July and August are ideal, although we must be prepared to find more people. Even so, Cala del Plomo remains less crowded than other beaches in the area. The water temperatures are perfect for swimming and snorkeling for hours. Winter, although cooler, also has its charm for hiking and photography lovers, offering deserted landscapes and very special light. In short, if we prioritize peace, spring and autumn are unbeatable; if we seek heat and swimming, summer awaits us.

Despite its pristine character and lack of infrastructure, Cala del Plomo is a perfect setting for a series of activities that connect us with nature. The star activity, without a doubt, is snorkeling. Thanks to the incredible transparency of its waters and the presence of underwater rock formations, we can explore a fascinating underwater world. Bringing our own mask, snorkel, and fins, we will dive into a marine ecosystem full of life, observing colorful fish, anemones, and various species of algae.
