How to get to Cala de la Barronal

Getting to Cala de la Barronal is part of the adventure and, for us, one of its great attractions. Don't expect to find direct car access or a car park right on the beach; its beauty lies, in part, in that small difficulty that keeps it sheltered from mass tourism. The cove is located between the towns of Rodalquilar and Las Negras, within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

Access from Rodalquilar

If we come from Rodalquilar, the most common route, we must take the road that leaves the town towards the coast, towards Playazo. Before reaching Playazo, we will find a dirt track on our right that indicates the direction to Cala de la Barronal. This track, although passable, requires caution, especially if your vehicle is not a 4x4. We always recommend driving slowly to avoid surprises and enjoy the arid, volcanic landscape that surrounds us.

After a few kilometres on the dirt track, you will reach an area where you can park informally, often at the side of the road. From this point, access to the cove is on foot, via a well-marked but low-medium difficulty path that gently descends to the beach. The walk usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes, depending on our pace and footwear. It is essential to wear comfortable and suitable footwear for walking on uneven terrain, and, of course, water, plenty of water, especially in the warmer months.

Access from Las Negras

Alternatively, you can access the cove from Las Negras. In this case, the route is somewhat longer and perhaps a bit more demanding, but equally rewarding. From Las Negras, we will take the track that leads to Cala San Pedro. Before reaching it, we will find turn-offs that will lead us, after a good walk, to Barronal. This option is more for hiking lovers who want to explore the coast more thoroughly and enjoy the panoramic views of the coastline. Whichever route you choose, the landscape that accompanies us is a sublime example of the volcanic geology of Cabo de Gata, with unique rock formations and vegetation adapted to the aridity of the environment. For us, every step towards Barronal is a deeper immersion into the authenticity of the park.

The sand and the water

Once we descend the path and Cala de la Barronal opens before our eyes, the first impression is always the same: awe. The sand is, without a doubt, one of its most outstanding features. We find a fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch, that invites us to spread out a towel and simply let ourselves be carried away by the tranquillity of the place. It's the kind of sand that slips through your fingers, perfect for building sandcastles or simply feeling its warmth under our feet.

But if the sand is a delight, the waters of Barronal are a true marvel. Its waters are crystal-clear, with a transparency that allows us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. The tones range from an intense blue in the distance to an emerald turquoise near the shore, creating a hypnotic chromatic gradient. The absence of large waves, thanks to its sheltered location, makes the sea here generally very calm, almost a pond, which makes it an ideal place for bathing and for those who enjoy swimming without worries.

For us, the water of Cala de la Barronal is a constant invitation to immersion. The water temperature is usually very pleasant for much of the year, especially from late spring well into autumn. This combination of fine sand and calm, transparent waters creates a rich and fascinating underwater ecosystem.
