Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Puerto Blanco in Calpe, Alicante, a feeling of tranquility and well-being envelops us. This small hidden gem, more than a beach, is a cozy cove that discreetly shelters south of the imposing Peñón de Ifach, offering us a perfect refuge from the bustle of the larger, busier beaches in the area. Its privileged location, next to a small marina that gives it its name, gives it a special charm and natural protection that translates into unusually calm and transparent waters.
We, as experts on the Mediterranean coast, can only highly recommend a visit to this beach in Calpe. It is the ideal place for those seeking to escape, for families with young children who need the safety of serene waters, or simply for those who want to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Costa Blanca without large crowds. Playa de Puerto Blanco is not just a destination; it is an experience that invites disconnection, leisurely enjoyment, and connection with the sea in its purest and kindest state.
How to Get to Playa de Puerto Blanco
Getting to Playa de Puerto Blanco is relatively straightforward, although its character as a more secluded cove can make it go unnoticed by the less experienced tourist. If we are coming from the center of Calpe, the most direct route is to follow the CV-746 road heading south, towards Moraira. We will see signs for Puerto Blanco or the Calpe Yacht Club. Once in the vicinity of the port, the cove is right next to it.
By Car
We always recommend the car for greater comfort, especially if we are traveling with beach equipment or with family. There is a parking area, although limited, near the marina. During the summer months, it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot, so we advise arriving early. From the parking lot, access to the sand is via some stairs, which gives it a more intimate touch but limits full accessibility.
Public Transport
Although less direct, it is possible to get there using Calpe's public transport. There are urban bus lines connecting the center with the more southern areas of the municipality, near Puerto Blanco. However, we will likely have to walk a stretch from the nearest stop to the cove. It's always a good idea to check updated schedules and routes in advance.
On Foot or by Bicycle
For the more adventurous or those staying nearby, a pleasant walk or bike ride along the promenade and surrounding streets can be an excellent option. The panoramic views of the coast and the Peñón de Ifach during the journey are an undeniable plus.
The Sand and Water
When stepping onto Playa de Puerto Blanco, we immediately notice the particularity of its surface. It is not the typical fine, golden sand found on other large beaches in Alicante, but a unique mixture. Here, the type of sand is mixed, a combination of coarser sand with small pebbles and stones that give it a very characteristic texture and color. This composition keeps the water incredibly clear, as the sand is not easily stirred up, even when there is some swell, although in this cove the sea is usually like a pond.
The type of ground under our feet is, therefore, mixed, a delight for the senses and a different experience. We love the feeling of the small pebbles when walking and the way the sun makes them shine underwater. But, without a doubt, the most notable feature of Playa de Puerto Blanco is its waters. They are of astonishing transparency, with turquoise and emerald hues that invite you to dive in. The protection provided by the port means the sea is almost always calm, creating a perfect natural pool for swimming and, above all, for snorkeling. The underwater visibility is exceptional, allowing us to easily observe the marine life inhabiting its nearby rocky seabeds.
Services and Facilities
Despite being a smaller cove, Playa de Puerto Blanco pleasantly surprises us with a good provision of services that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay. We highly value that such a tranquil place does not forgo the essentials for the visitor's well-being.
Among the services we find, the following stand out:- Showers: Essential for washing off the salt and sand after a refreshing swim.
- Bathrooms/WC: A basic service that is always appreciated for our comfort.
- Lifeguards: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard service, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we are with children.
- Parking: As already mentioned, there is a parking area, although limited, near the marina. It's a plus for those traveling by private vehicle.
- Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Being next to the marina, we have the advantage of having several establishments where we can enjoy a cold drink, a snack, or even a more elaborate meal. There are options for all tastes, from a more informal chiringuito to restaurants with seafood specialties.
- Sunbeds and Umbrellas: For those who prefer not to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting umbrellas and sunbeds, making the beach day even easier.
- Equipment Rental: The proximity to the marina and the calmness of its waters make it an ideal place for renting equipment for gentle water sports like kayaks or paddle surf boards. It's an excellent way to explore the cove from another perspective.
Best Time to Visit
We, with our experience, can assure you that Playa de Puerto Blanco is a destination that can be enjoyed for much of the year, thanks to the enviable Mediterranean climate of the Costa Blanca. However, there are times that, in our opinion, are more conducive to getting the most out of it.
High Season (June to September)
The summer months are, logically, the most popular. Temperatures are warm, the sun shines brightly, and the sea water reaches its most pleasant temperature. This is the time when all services are fully operational (lifeguards, equipment rental, chiringuitos). The downside is that, although Playa de Puerto Blanco is quieter than others, there can be more people. If we come during these months, we advise arriving early to secure a good spot and parking.
Mid-Season (April-May and October)
For us, spring and early autumn are, without a doubt, the best times to visit this beach in Calpe. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, perfect for sunbathing and walking. The sea water is already warm enough for a refreshing swim, and most importantly: the influx of tourists is considerably lower. We can enjoy the cove with a peace and tranquility that are harder to find in summer. It is the ideal time for relaxation and photography, without the crowds.
Low Season (November to March)
During the winter months, Playa de Puerto Blanco transforms into an almost solitary haven of peace. Although swimming may be only for the bravest, the mild climate of Alicante allows for pleasant walks along the shore, enjoying the winter sun and the impressive views of the Peñón de Ifach and the Mediterranean. Many services will be closed, but the scenic beauty and serenity of the environment more than compensate.
Activities and Sports
The tranquil nature and crystal-clear waters of Playa de Puerto Blanco make it the perfect setting for a series of activities that seek connection with the sea and relaxation. We, who have explored countless beaches in Alicante, know how to appreciate places where calm invites gentle adventure.
Snorkeling and Diving
Undoubtedly, the star activity here is snorkeling. The exceptional transparency of its waters and the rocky seabeds near the port's breakwaters are a paradise for lovers of underwater life. We can spend hours observing schools of fish, small coral formations, and other marine species. For the more experienced, light diving is also an option to explore in greater depth. Let's not forget our masks and snorkels.
Paddle Surf and Kayaking
The absence of large waves makes this cove an ideal place to start or practice paddle surfing (SUP) and kayaking. We can rent equipment at the marina itself or from nearby companies. Paddling on these calm waters, with the views of the Calpe coast in the background, is a truly rewarding experience and a different way to exercise and enjoy the landscape.
Swimming and Relaxing Bath
For us, simply swimming in these waters is a pleasure. The feeling of security offered by its calm waters is unmatched, making it perfect for long swims or simply floating and letting yourself be carried by the sea breeze. It is the ideal place for a restorative and worry-free swim.
Walks and Photography
The surroundings of Playa de Puerto Blanco invite pleasant walks. We can walk along the coastal path or the port promenade. Furthermore, the beauty of the surroundings, with the Peñón de Ifach in the distance and the boats in the port, offers countless opportunities for photography. The sunsets from this cove are especially beautiful.
For Families with Children
We are always looking for the best options for families, and Playa de Puerto Blanco stands out as one of the best choices among the beaches of Calpe to go with the little ones. Its character as a protected cove gives it ideal characteristics for them.
Calm and Safe Waters
The main advantage for families is, without a doubt, the calmness of its waters. Being sheltered by the port structure, the waves are practically non-existent, creating a true natural pool. This allows children to play on the shore and bathe in complete safety, under the watchful eye of their parents. There are no strong currents or unexpected surprises.
Shallow Bottom
The seabed of the cove descends gently, meaning children can go into the water without it suddenly covering them. This gives them confidence and provides us, as adults, with great peace of mind.
Nearby Services
The presence of lifeguards during the high season is a crucial point for child safety. Additionally, having showers and bathrooms/WC nearby greatly facilitates the logistics of a beach day with children. And if they crave an ice cream or a drink, the chiringuitos and restaurants of the port are just a step away.
Fun Activities
Besides splashing and building sand (or pebble) castles, children can start snorkeling with simple goggles, marveling at the fish swimming in the clear waters. Renting kayaks or paddle surf boards can also be a fun activity to do as a family, always under adult supervision.
In summary, Playa de Puerto Blanco offers a safe, comfortable, and fun environment for families to enjoy an unforgettable beach day on the Costa Blanca.
