How to Get to Cala dels Testos

Getting to Cala dels Testos is undoubtedly part of the adventure and what sets it apart from other beaches of Benitachell. Don't expect an easy, signposted access right to the shore. This cove is known for its 'Cliff Route' and the descent via ropes, which gives it that aura of exclusivity and, at the same time, challenge. We will guide you step by step so your arrival is as safe and pleasant as possible.

Route from Benitachell

From the center of Benitachell, we must head towards the Cumbre del Sol urbanization area. We will follow the signs to Cala del Moraig, but before reaching it, we will find turn-offs or areas to park the car. Generally, the starting point for the descent to Cala dels Testos is near the urbanization, close to Cala Llebeig or following sections of the PR-CV 354 hiking trail, known as the 'Cliff Route'.

Parking

Parking is not directly at the cove, but at the top of the cliff. There are designated (or tolerated) areas to leave the vehicle. It is essential to arrive early, especially in high season, as spaces are limited and the cove's popularity has been increasing. Once parked, the real expedition begins on foot.

The Rope Descent

This is the key point and what makes Cala dels Testos a unique experience. From the trail's starting point, we face a 20-30 minute walk over uneven, rocky terrain, often exposed to the sun. The final stretch of the descent is the most exciting and, at the same time, the most demanding: a vertical rock wall a few meters high that is overcome with the help of fixed ropes. These ropes are permanently installed, but it is crucial to use them with caution and check their condition. While it doesn't require climbing experience, it does demand some agility, good physical condition, and, above all, proper footwear (no flip-flops or beach sandals; good trekking or sports shoes with good grip are essential).

• Footwear: Essential. Sports or trekking shoes with a good sole. Forget flip-flops.
• Backpack: Carry only the bare essentials and make sure it's comfortable to carry. Water, sunscreen, some food, and your snorkel mask.
• Caution: Be patient, especially if there are more people. Respect turns and help those in need. Safety first.
• Children: We do not recommend this route for young children. For teenagers or older children with hiking experience and good physical condition, it can be an exciting adventure, always under adult supervision.

The Sand and Water

Upon arriving at Cala dels Testos, the first thing that surprises us is its surface. Here we won't find the typical fine, golden sand that characterizes many beaches of Alicante. Instead, the ground is composed of large pebbles and cobblestones, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves. This characteristic, far from detracting from its charm, gives it a unique personality and a different feel under our feet. It is advisable to wear water shoes or reef shoes to walk comfortably along the shore and in the water, thus protecting our feet from the stones.

But if the ground is particular, the water is, without a doubt, the true star of this cove. The waters of Cala dels Testos are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from the lightest turquoise blue at the shore to a deep indigo as we go further in. This clarity is due to the absence of fine sand in suspension and the richness of its rocky seabed. It's a true natural aquarium, making it a paradise for lovers of snorkeling and scuba diving.

An Underwater Paradise

Dive in and discover a vibrant world beneath the surface. The visibility is exceptional, allowing us to observe in detail the varied marine fauna that inhabits the rocks and the posidonia seagrass meadows. Colorful fish, sea urchins, starfish, and, with a bit of luck, even a moray eel or octopus, await us. It is a delicate ecosystem, and therefore, it is essential to practice responsible tourism, without touching or disturbing the marine flora and fauna.

The entry into the water is gentle but quickly becomes deep, making it ideal for swimming and exploring without crowds. The protection of the surrounding cliffs usually keeps the waters calm, although on days of strong easterly swell, it can be a bit more choppy. We always recommend checking the maritime forecast before your visit to ensure an optimal and safe experience.

Services and Facilities

This is where we must be completely honest and transparent: Cala dels Testos is a wild cove and, as such, lacks most of the services and facilities we would find on more urbanized beaches. This is precisely part of its charm and what allows it to maintain its natural, pristine state. If you're looking for beach bars, showers, lifeguards, or public toilets, this is not your beach. And we, sincerely, believe it should stay that way.

What You Won't Find (And Why It's Good)

• Showers and Toilets: There are no facilities of this kind. We must be foresighted and responsible, taking all our trash with us and avoiding leaving any trace of our presence.
• Beach Bars or Restaurants: The cove does not have any establishment to buy food or drink. It is essential that you bring your own provisions: plenty of water (very important after the descent!), some fruit, sandwiches, or nuts. Remember to take all packaging back with you.
• Lifeguard Service: There is no lifeguard service. Therefore, safety is our own responsibility. It is vital to be aware of our own limitations, not take unnecessary risks, and pay attention to sea conditions. If you are not a strong swimmer, it is better to stay near the shore or use a life jacket.
• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: There is no rental service. If you want some shade, you can try to find a spot under the rocks (with caution for possible rockfalls) or bring a lightweight umbrella that is easy to carry during the descent.

The Only 'Service': Parking (at the top)

As mentioned in the 'How to Get There' section, there is a Parking area at the top of the cliff, before starting the trail and the rope descent. This parking is informal and has limited spaces, so it is crucial to arrive early to secure a spot. From there, the rest of the journey is on foot. We consider this 'service' as a starting point for the adventure, rather than a convenience right by the beach.

In summary, the philosophy when visiting Cala dels Testos must be one of self-sufficiency and absolute respect for the environment. Prepare your backpack with everything you need and be ready to completely disconnect from urban comforts and connect with nature in its purest state.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Cala dels Testos can make a big difference in your experience. Given its wild nature and particular access, certain times of the year are more favorable than others to fully enjoy this gem among the beaches of Alicante.

Spring (April - June)

For us, spring is one of the best times. The temperatures are pleasant, neither too cold nor excessively hot, making the descent and walk much more comfortable. The water starts to be warm enough for bathing, especially from May onwards. Furthermore, the crowds are significantly smaller than in summer, allowing you to enjoy the cove with greater tranquility and have more space for yourselves. The green landscapes of the cliffs, dotted with wildflowers, are also an added spectacle that enhances the photogenic beauty of the place.

Early Summer (July)

July, before the second half, can be a good option. The water temperatures are ideal for bathing and snorkeling, and the sun shines in all its splendor. However, the number of visitors already starts to be considerably higher, especially on weekends. If you decide to come in July, we strongly recommend arriving early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) to secure parking and enjoy the cove with relative calm before the crowds arrive.

Late Summer (August)

We advise against visiting Cala dels Testos in August. It is the month of peak tourist traffic on the Costa Blanca, and the cove can become saturated, losing much of its wild and tranquil charm. Parking becomes a near-impossible mission and the descent can have long queues. Additionally, the intense heat can make the walk and the effort of the descent more exhausting and less safe. If you can only come in August, we insist on arriving at dawn.

Autumn (September - October)

Autumn, especially September and early October, is another fantastic time. The summer crowds have gone, temperatures are still very pleasant for bathing, and the sun is not as scorching as in summer. The sea retains the heat accumulated during the summer, making the water still perfect for bathing and water activities. Furthermore, the sunsets at this time have a special light that enhances the beauty of the landscape.

Winter (November - March)

During the winter months, the cove is practically yours. The climate on the Costa Blanca is usually mild, with many sunny days, but the water will be cold for bathing, unless you are very brave or use a wetsuit. It is an ideal time to enjoy the hiking trail and the scenic beauty without crowds, but not so much for water activities. Still, the peace you breathe is unmatched.
