How to Get to Playa de Vilar

Getting to Playa de Vilar is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small detour from the busier routes, which helps maintain its natural charm. If we're coming from Santiago de Compostela, we'll take the AG-11 highway towards Ribeira. Once in Ribeira, we'll follow the signs to the Corrubedo Dunes Natural Park and the Carregal and Vilar Lagoon. Playa de Vilar is located just before reaching the famous Corrubedo lighthouse and its dune complex. There is signage to guide us.

Access and Parking

Access to the beach is via wooden walkways that protect the fragile dune system, a measure we applaud. Regarding parking, we'll find free parking areas, although they are usually more or less improvised dirt or gravel areas near the main access points. During the high season, especially on weekends in July and August, these parking lots can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot and avoid crowds. The walk from the car to the sand is short and pleasant, making it accessible for most visitors.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Vilar is famous for its fine, golden sand, which stretches for over a kilometer. It's a delight for the feet, soft and comfortable, perfect for long barefoot walks or for children to build sandcastles. The quality of the sand is exceptional, giving it a feeling of cleanliness and purity not always found in more urbanized beaches.

As for the water, we encounter the characteristic waters of the Galician Atlantic: crystal clear and, at times, with a refreshing touch. Despite being Atlantic, the currents at Vilar are usually more moderate than in other areas, and the depth increases gradually, making it quite safe for swimming, especially in the area closest to the main access points. The water color varies between blue and green tones, reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation, creating a visually very attractive landscape. The temperature, as is usual in Galicia, can be a bit cold for some, but we believe it's the perfect counterpoint for sunny summer days.

Services and Facilities

Despite its natural and almost wild character, Playa de Vilar has a series of basic services that guarantee a comfortable and safe stay for its visitors. We highly value this balance between nature and functionality.

Main Services

• Lifeguards: During the summer season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which provides us with great peace of mind, especially if we're with children. Their presence is essential for the safety of all swimmers.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: At the main access points, we'll find shower modules to rinse off sand and salt after swimming, as well as public toilets. These services, although basic, are essential and are kept in good condition.
• Chiringuitos (Beach Bars): Although there are no large permanent establishments, temporary chiringuitos are usually set up near the access points in the summer. These small bars offer us cold drinks, ice cream, and some snacks, ideal for refreshing ourselves or having a bite without straying too far from the sand. They are usually simple, but with the charm of the ephemeral and proximity to the sea.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there are designated parking areas, free and close to the access points, although they are not paved, organized urban-style parking lots.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the best time to visit Playa de Vilar is undoubtedly during the summer months, from June to September. This is when temperatures are most pleasant, days are longer, and the sun shines more intensely, inviting us to fully enjoy swimming and outdoor activities. Furthermore, it's the season when all services, such as lifeguards and chiringuitos, are operational.

However, we wouldn't rule out a visit in spring or autumn. During these seasons, the beach takes on a different beauty, more wild and solitary. The dune system is displayed in all its splendor, the light is perfect for photography, and the temperatures, although not ideal for swimming, are perfect for long walks and feeling the force of the Atlantic without the summer crowds.
