How to Get to Playa de Doniños

Getting to Playa de Doniños is relatively straightforward, although it requires a private vehicle or taxi, as public transport is limited. From the center of Ferrol, the drive takes approximately 15-20 minutes, following signs towards the west coast. The FV-101 road is the main access route, taking us directly to the beach area. As we approach, the landscape begins to transform, revealing the rural and coastal beauty of the area.

Once near the beach, we'll find several parking areas. It's important to note that, although there are designated spaces, many are dirt parking lots or informal areas along the road. During the summer months, especially on weekends, these can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. The walk from the parking area to the sand is short and allows us to start enjoying the first views of this impressive sandy beach.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Doniños is distinguished by its sand. It's a fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch, stretching for almost two kilometers. It's perfect for long barefoot walks, building sandcastles, or simply relaxing in the sun. The width of the sandy shore is one of its great advantages, as even on the busiest days, we can always find a quiet corner for ourselves.

As for the water, we're talking about the majestic Atlantic. Its waters are crystal clear, of an intense blue-green color, but they are also known for their cool temperature and, at times, for their strong currents and waves. The latter, far from being a drawback, is precisely what makes Doniños one of the surfing paradises in Galicia. For less experienced swimmers, we always recommend caution and staying near the shore or in areas monitored by lifeguards. The purity and force of the water here are an experience in themselves.

• Parking: As mentioned, there are parking areas, although they can be informal and fill up during peak season.
• Chiringuitos: Several chiringuitos (beach bars) set up on the beach during the summer, offering drinks, ice cream, and some fast food. They are perfect for recharging and enjoying the views in a relaxed atmosphere.
• Surf schools: Given its fame as a surf spot, it's no surprise to find several schools offering lessons and equipment rental for all levels.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Doniños will largely depend on our intentions. We have enjoyed this beach at different times and each has its charm:

• Summer (June to September): This is the ideal time for swimmers and for those seeking a livelier atmosphere. Services are in full swing, the sun shines stronger, and the water, although cool, is more inviting. However, this is also when the beach receives the most visitors.
• Spring and Autumn (April-May and October-November): For surfers, these are undoubtedly the best seasons. The waves are more consistent and powerful, and the number of people is lower, allowing for a more peaceful enjoyment of the sea conditions. Furthermore, the landscape takes on a more dramatic tone and atmosphere, ideal for photography.
• Winter (December to March): For the bravest surfers and lovers of wild landscape photography, winter offers spectacular scenes. The beach shows itself in its purest and most uninhabited state, with the force of the Atlantic in all its splendor. It's a time of deep connection with nature, although weather conditions can be more adverse.
