Today we venture into the heart of the Betanzos estuary, on the coast of A Coruña, to discover one of those jewels that Galicia guards zealously: Playa de Arnela. Located in the municipality of Sada, this cove is much more than just a sandy beach; it is a sanctuary of tranquility, a natural canvas where the green of the vegetation blends with the golden sand and the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean. Arnela invites us to slow down, take a deep breath, and let ourselves be carried away by the gentle sea breeze.

When we think of Galician beaches, we often imagine extensive and wild sandy shores, but Arnela shows us another facet of our coast: that of the sheltered, almost intimate cove, perfect for those seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle. Its unique beauty, combined with the calm of its waters, makes it an idyllic destination for couples, families, and any soul longing to connect with nature in its purest state. How to Get to Playa de Arnela

Getting to Playa de Arnela is relatively straightforward, although it requires a small detour from the busier routes, which contributes to its charm as a 'hidden' place. If we are coming from A Coruña, the most direct way is to take the AC-12 road towards Sada. Once in Sada, we must follow the signs towards the coastal area, and specifically towards Arnela, which is usually well signposted. The journey from the Herculine city will take us just 20-30 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Car Access and Parking

The car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option to get to Arnela. In the vicinity of the beach, especially on the upper part of the cliff or on the adjacent streets leading down to the cove, there are usually designated parking areas. It is important to consider that during the summer months and on good-weather weekends, these spaces can be scarce, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot. The final access to the sand is usually via stairs or a path, which adds a touch of adventure to the arrival.

Public Transport

Although public transport will not leave us directly on the sand, we can get quite close. There are bus lines connecting A Coruña with Sada. Once in the center of Sada, Playa de Arnela is at a distance that we could cover on foot (approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the starting point in Sada) or take a local taxi. This option is ideal for those who prefer not to worry about parking and enjoy a walk through the picturesque coastal town before reaching the beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Arnela is, without a doubt, its fine, golden sand. It is a delight to walk barefoot on it, feeling its softness under our feet. This fine-grained sand is perfect for spreading out a towel, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply relaxing in the sun. Its light tone contrasts wonderfully with the blue of the sea, creating a postcard-worthy image that invites contemplation.

The waters of Arnela are another of its great treasures. Generally calm and crystal clear, they reflect the Galician sky with astonishing purity. Being sheltered by the cliffs and the configuration of the estuary, the cove is usually protected from the stronger currents of the open Atlantic, making it a safe place for swimming. The water temperature, as is usual on the beaches of A Coruña, can be somewhat cool, especially outside the summer months, but it is incredibly refreshing and invigorating on hot days. Despite its natural and somewhat secluded character, Playa de Arnela has some basic services that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant stay, especially during the high season. This is not an urbanized beach with major infrastructure, and that is precisely part of its charm, but we do find the essentials for our enjoyment.

Main Services

During the summer months, it is common to find lifeguards watching over the beach, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially if we are with children. Showers are also usually installed to rinse off the sand and salt before heading home, and sometimes, portable or modular toilets/WCs complement the offering. As mentioned earlier, the parking in the vicinity facilitates access to the beach.

Proximity to Sada

It is important to remember that Playa de Arnela benefits greatly from its proximity to Sada. The urban center of Sada, just a few minutes by car or a walk away, offers a much wider range of services: supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, shops, and, of course, an excellent dining scene. If we need something beyond the basics the beach offers, Sada is just around the corner. This combination of natural tranquility at Arnela and the convenience of Sada's urban services is, for us, one of the great advantages of this destination.
