One of those hidden treasures, which we have had the pleasure of discovering and encourage you to explore, is Playa de Area Maior in the municipality of Camariñas, in the province of A Coruña.

How to Get to Playa de Area Maior

Getting to Playa de Area Maior is a fundamental part of the experience, as it gradually immerses us in the landscape of the Costa da Morte. Although it is located in a natural and relatively isolated setting, access is straightforward, mainly if we travel by car, which is the most recommended and practically indispensable option for exploring this area of A Coruña with freedom and flexibility. From the main Galician cities, the journey is an opportunity to enjoy the green inland landscapes that gradually open up to the sea.

If we come from A Coruña, the most direct route will take us along the AG-55 highway towards Carballo, then taking the AC-552 towards Cee and Camariñas. Once near Camariñas, we will look for signs towards the Faro de Cabo Vilán, as the beach is in the same direction. From Santiago de Compostela, the route is similar, although we will start on the AG-56 highway towards Noia and then continue along the AC-550 skirting the coast until connecting with the AC-552.

Once we approach Camariñas, the signage towards the Faro de Cabo Vilán or, failing that, towards Playa de Area Maior itself, becomes clearer. Local roads, such as the AC-432, will guide us through small rural villages and coastal landscapes until we reach the vicinity of the beach. We will see that access to the beach has an enabled Parking area, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. Although it is not a large parking lot, it is usually sufficient for the usual flow of this beach, which, fortunately, is not usually overcrowded. We always recommend arriving early during the high season to secure a good spot. The last stretch to the sand is a short and comfortable walk, allowing us to admire the beauty of the cove before stepping onto the fine sand.

The predominant type of seabed is, without a doubt, sand, which makes entering the sea smooth and gradual, without rocks or pebbles hindering access. It is a pleasure to walk along the shore, feeling the ebb and flow of the waves and the softness of the sand underwater. As we mentioned, the existence of a parking area is a significant plus, especially for those arriving by car. It is not a large, paved parking lot, but a designated area where we can leave our vehicle safely and start our beach day.

Regarding beach services, we find lifeguard surveillance during the summer season, which provides peace of mind, especially for families with children. It is important to always respect the flags and instructions of the lifeguards, as even in a protected cove, sea conditions can change. For our comfort, the beach also has public toilets, a basic but essential service that is greatly appreciated.

One of the most charming aspects of this beach is its atmosphere. Unlike other more developed beaches, here we will not find rows of sun loungers and umbrellas for rent or numerous beach bars. The essence of Playa de Area Maior is its naturalness. Therefore, it is essential to come prepared: bring your own umbrella for shade, a cooler with drinks and snacks, and everything you need to spend the day. This 'do-it-yourself' approach is part of its charm and allows us to connect more deeply with the environment. However, in the nearby village of Camariñas, just a few minutes away by car, we will find all kinds of services: supermarkets, restaurants where we can taste excellent local seafood, and shops. Our recommendation is to enjoy a full day at the beach with a picnic and then head to Camariñas for a well-deserved dinner while watching the sunset over the estuary.
