But what truly sets it apart and has catapulted it to worldwide fame is its impressive coral barrier, considered one of the best-preserved and most spectacular in the Caribbean. How to Get to Playa María la Gorda

Getting to Playa María la Gorda is part of the adventure, given its remote character and location in a natural reserve. Don't expect to find an international airport around the corner. The most common way to access it is by road, which allows us to enjoy the rural landscapes of Pinar del Río.

From Havana or Pinar del Río City

If we are coming from Havana, the journey is considerable, approximately 4-5 hours by car, covering about 300 km. The route takes us along the National Highway to the city of Pinar del Río, and from there, we continue west on secondary roads that pass through small towns and tobacco fields. It is a journey that, although long, immerses us in authentic Cuba.

From the city of Pinar del Río itself, the trip is about 2.5 to 3 hours, covering about 150 km. The roads may not be in the best condition in some sections, so we recommend traveling during the day and with a suitable vehicle.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: This is the option that gives us the most freedom to explore. However, it should be noted that gas stations are scarce on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, so it is vital to refuel in Pinar del Río or Sandino.
• Private Taxi: We can hire a taxi from Havana or Pinar del Río. It is a comfortable option, although more expensive. It is advisable to negotiate the price in advance.
• Viazul: The Viazul buses, the tourist transportation network, do not go directly to María la Gorda. The closest stop would be in Pinar del Río or Sandino, from where we would need a taxi or local transport for the final leg. This option is more economical but requires more planning.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Playa María la Gorda, we immediately notice the quality of its sand. It is fine sand, of an almost immaculate white, inviting us to walk barefoot and relax under the Caribbean sun. Unlike other more crowded beaches, the space here is generous, allowing us to find our own corner of tranquility.

But it is in the water that this Pinar del Río beach truly takes our breath away. The waters are incredibly crystal clear, with shades ranging from light turquoise at the shore to deep blue as we venture further out. This clarity is a blessing, especially for divers and snorkeling enthusiasts, as underwater visibility is exceptional, often exceeding 30 meters in depth. We can observe small fish swimming near the shore even without submerging our heads, which adds a magical touch to the experience.

The water temperature is warm and pleasant year-round, making every swim a delight. The absence of strong currents near the coast makes it a safe place to enjoy a relaxing dip.

• Equipment Rental: Fundamental to its vocation, the diving center offers rental of all necessary equipment for diving and snorkeling: wetsuits, fins, masks, regulators, tanks, etc. They also have boats for diving excursions.
• Parking: There is a parking area available for visitors' and hotel guests' vehicles.
• Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: We can find umbrellas and sun loungers on the beach area in front of the hotel, perfect for relaxing after a dive or simply enjoying the sun.
