How to Get to Playa Los Cocos

Getting to Playa Los Cocos is relatively easy, especially if you are in the city of Matanzas or its surroundings. Its strategic location, a few kilometers west of downtown Matanzas, makes it very accessible. We usually opt for local transport for a more immersive experience, although there are several options to consider.

From Matanzas City

• By taxi: This is the most comfortable and fastest option. You can take a taxi from any point in the city of Matanzas. The journey is short, about 15-20 minutes, and the cost is reasonable. Agree on the price with the driver before starting the trip to avoid surprises. Many local taxi drivers know the beach well and may even offer a round-trip service with waiting time.
• By local bus: For a more economical and authentic experience, you can take a public bus from the Matanzas terminal heading towards the coastal areas west of the city. Ask for the route that passes by the Playa Los Cocos area. Keep in mind that buses in Cuba can be somewhat slow and are often crowded, but it's an excellent way to observe daily life.
• By rental car: If you have chosen to rent a car, the road to the beach is well signposted and the journey is very pleasant. Parking is available near the beach, although it's not always a formal parking lot, but rather spaces set up along the road or near the chiringuitos.

From Other Cities

• From Varadero: If you are in Varadero, Cuba's main tourist resort, Playa Los Cocos is about 45-60 minutes away by car. You can hire a tourist taxi or a private car. It's an excellent option for a day trip and to experience a beach with a different atmosphere from the large hotels in Varadero.
• From Havana: From the capital, the trip is longer, about 2 hours by car via the National Highway. If you're coming from Havana, we recommend combining the beach visit with a tour of the city of Matanzas to make the most of the journey.

The Sand and Water

The true star of Playa Los Cocos is undoubtedly its sand and water. We were captivated from the first time. The sand is immaculately white, fine as talcum powder, and surprisingly soft underfoot. Walking barefoot along the shore is a delight, almost a therapy. You won't find sharp rocks or annoying pebbles; just this natural carpet that invites you to lay out your towel and sink into absolute laziness. Its light tone contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the sea, creating a landscape that looks like it's from a postcard.

The waters, on the other hand, are a constant invitation to immersion. They are incredibly clear, allowing you to see the sandy bottom easily, even several meters from the shore. What we like most is their calmness. Playa Los Cocos is sheltered, which means the waves are usually gentle and the current is very moderate. This makes it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing in the sea, even for those who are not experienced swimmers. The water temperature is warm for most of the year, inviting long, unhurried swims. It's the perfect place to float, be rocked by the gentle tide, and simply enjoy the Caribbean sun. The combination of fine sand and calm waters is what makes it one of our favorite Matanzas beaches for a day of pure relaxation.

Services and Facilities

Despite being a beach with a more local atmosphere and less developed for tourism than other areas, Playa Los Cocos offers a series of basic services that ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We have always found what we need for a perfect day in the sun.

• Chiringuitos: Along the beach, you will find small chiringuitos and food stalls run by locals. Here you can enjoy refreshments, cold beers, simple cocktails like mojito or piña colada, and some snacks or light meals. They often prepare fresh fish of the day, tostones (fried plantains), or sandwiches. It's an excellent opportunity to try the most authentic Cuban cuisine at very affordable prices.
