We have been fortunate enough to dive into its waters, and the experience is simply unforgettable.

This Playa Coral beach is strategically located on the northern coast of Matanzas province, a short distance from the vibrant city of Matanzas and famous Varadero. It's a destination that combines the tranquility of a protected natural space with the excitement of exploring a vibrant, teeming marine ecosystem. Here, the real spectacle isn't so much on the sand under the sun, but in what hides beneath the crystal-clear surface of its waters.

How to Get to Playa Coral

Getting to Playa Coral is relatively easy, especially if you're staying in Varadero or the city of Matanzas. We highly recommend renting a car for total freedom, although other very viable options also exist. From Varadero, the journey is approximately 20-30 minutes heading east, via the Vía Blanca or the Carretera Central. It's a scenic road that runs along the coast and offers beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea.

If you're coming from the city of Matanzas, the trip is even shorter, about 15-20 minutes to the west. Signage for the dive centers and beach entrances is quite clear once you get close to the area. It's also possible to book organized excursions from Varadero hotels, which usually include transportation and snorkeling or diving equipment. This is an excellent option if you prefer not to worry about logistics and simply enjoy the day.

Another alternative is to take a taxi, which can be a comfortable option if you're traveling in a group. Always agree on the price before starting the trip to avoid surprises. Shared taxis or 'almendrones' (shared vintage cars) also operate in the area and are a more economical way to get around, although they require a bit more patience and flexibility. Whatever method you choose, the journey to Playa Coral is part of the adventure and will prepare you for the beauty that awaits.

When we think of Playa Coral, the image that comes to mind isn't so much an extensive stretch of golden sand, but a coast dotted with small coves and rocky access points that give way to a spectacular underwater world. The sand we found in the access areas is fine, of a whitish color that contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the sea. However, the type of ground at the shore is rather mixed, with coral formations and small rocks that require caution when entering and exiting the water, so we recommend wearing water shoes or appropriate footwear.

But the true magic of Playa Coral lies beneath the surface. Its waters are incredibly clear, with visibility that often exceeds 20 meters, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving. The water temperature is warm year-round, inviting prolonged dives without feeling cold. We were amazed by the richness of its coral reef, which stretches along the coast, forming a vibrant habitat for an impressive diversity of tropical fish and other marine creatures.

Exploring this reef is like venturing into an underwater garden full of color and life. We saw schools of brightly colored fish, barracudas, moray eels, and even the occasional octopus hiding among the rocks.
