We consider it an ideal destination to disconnect, enjoy the Caribbean sun, and immerse ourselves in the local culture without the usual crowds of other tourist spots. Its atmosphere is relaxed, conducive to long hours of reading under a palm tree or simply contemplating the blue horizon.

How to Get to Playa El Mégano

Getting to Playa El Mégano from central Havana is relatively straightforward, and we recommend several options to suit different budgets and preferences. The beach is located within the Playas del Este circuit, about 20-25 kilometers from the city center, which translates to a journey of approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic and the mode of transport.

By Taxi

The most comfortable and direct way is to take a taxi. In Havana, finding taxis is easy; there are state-owned ones (yellow or modern 'almendrones') and private ones. Negotiating the price before getting in is crucial. A round trip with waiting time included for the return can cost between 30 and 50 CUC (or its equivalent in the current national currency). We always advise agreeing with the driver to wait for a few hours or to pick you up at a specific time, as it can be more difficult to find a taxi for the return directly at the beach.

By Tourist Bus

There is a tourist bus service, the Habana Bus Tour (T3), which departs from several points in Havana (such as Parque Central) and travels along the main Playas del Este, including El Mégano. It's a very economical and practical option. The buses are usually air-conditioned and offer several stops along the route. The ticket is valid for the whole day, allowing you to hop on and off at will. It's the option we usually suggest for those looking for an economical and flexible alternative.

By Rental Car

If you have the possibility of renting a car, the independence it offers is unbeatable. The road is easy to follow and in good condition. The advantage is that you can explore other nearby beaches and the surrounding towns at your own pace. At Playa El Mégano and its surroundings, you'll find parking areas, although some may be paid or managed by informal attendants.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto the sand of Playa El Mégano, its softness immediately captivates us. It's a fine type of sand, with a white-golden tone that sparkles under the Caribbean sun. Its texture is so pleasant that it invites you to walk barefoot, build sandcastles, or simply lie down and feel the warmth. Unlike other beaches with pebbles or rocks, the ground here is entirely sand, making it very comfortable and safe for your feet.

But if the sand is a delight, the water is the true star. The waters of El Mégano are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from light turquoise to deep blue. Thanks to the protection of a nearby reef, the waves are minimal, creating a serene and shallow bay, ideal for children and for those who enjoy a relaxing swim. The water temperature is warm all year round, allowing you to enjoy refreshing dips at any time. We have spent hours simply floating and observing marine life in the areas closest to the reef, which, although not a large coral, does harbor small fish and interesting formations for casual snorkeling.

Although Playa El Mégano is not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, it offers the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We greatly appreciate that, despite its tranquil atmosphere, it doesn't lack the basics.

• Chiringuitos and small restaurants: Along the beach and in its vicinity, there are several establishments where you can enjoy refreshing drinks, Cuban cocktails (the mojito is almost mandatory!), and local food. From fresh fish to Creole dishes, the offer is simple but tasty. It's the perfect place for an informal lunch with sea views.
• Umbrellas and sun loungers: It's possible to rent umbrellas and sun loungers for a reasonable price. This is especially useful for protection from the strong Caribbean sun, which, although delightful, requires caution. We always recommend taking advantage of them to enjoy the shade and comfort.
• Lifeguards: During the high season and on weekends, there are usually lifeguards watching over the beach, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially for families with children.
