How to Get to Playa Bacuranao

Getting to Playa Bacuranao from downtown Havana is relatively simple, making it a very accessible option for a day trip. Its proximity to the capital is, in fact, one of its strongest points. We're talking about a distance of approximately 15 to 20 kilometers, depending on the starting point in the city. This closeness allows us to enjoy a beach day without the need for long and exhausting journeys, maximizing our leisure time by the sea.

There are several transportation options we can consider. The most economical and, perhaps, the one that offers us the deepest immersion into local life, is public transport. From various points in Havana, such as Parque de la Fraternidad or the Central Station, we can take regular line buses heading towards the Playas del Este. Although Bacuranao is the first of these beaches, it's important to ask the driver or other passengers to make sure we get off at the correct stop. The buses can be crowded and don't always offer the greatest comfort, but they are undoubtedly an authentic and very economical experience.

Another alternative, more comfortable but also more expensive, is to take a taxi. We can negotiate the price with a private taxi driver, either one of the official yellow cabs or an 'almendrón', the classic American cars that operate as collective or private taxis. A taxi ride will take us directly to the beach in about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. It's an excellent option if we're traveling in a group, as we can share the costs. We can also opt to rent a car, which would give us the freedom to explore not only Playa Bacuranao but also other Havana beaches and their surroundings at our own pace. The road to the beach is in good condition, which makes the journey easy. Regardless of the means we choose, the journey will gift us interesting views of Havana's suburbs and the coastal landscape, preparing us for the relaxation that awaits.

The Sand and the Water

One of the most notable aspects of Playa Bacuranao is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The beach stretches like a crescent moon approximately 800 meters long, covered with light golden sand, fine in texture and soft to the touch. Walking barefoot on it is a delight, and children enjoy building sandcastles or simply playing with it. Unlike some rockier or pebbly beaches, Bacuranao's surface is predominantly sandy, making it very comfortable both for sunbathing and for walking along the shore.

As for the water, we find a Caribbean jewel. The waters of Playa Bacuranao are remarkably calm, of a turquoise hue that invites you to bathe and immerse yourself. The absence of strong currents and its shallow depth near the shore make it exceptionally safe, especially for young children and those who are not experienced swimmers. We can wade in several meters without the water covering us completely, which creates a feeling of safety and well-being. The water temperature is always pleasant, warm throughout the year, allowing for a dip in any season.

In addition to its calm and warmth, the waters of Bacuranao harbor a small but interesting coral reef a short distance from the shore. This reef, although not as spectacular as those in other Cuban diving destinations, is perfect for snorkeling and observing local marine life.
