Its name pays homage to the yacht 'Pilar' of the celebrated writer Ernest Hemingway, who found inspiration and tranquility in these very waters. Upon arriving here, we instantly understand why he considered it one of his favorite places.

How to Get to Playa Pilar

Getting to Playa Pilar is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite simple given its popularity. The beach is located on Cayo Guillermo, one of the islets that form part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago, north of Ciego de Ávila. The most common way to access it is by flying into Jardines del Rey International Airport (CCC), located on the neighboring key of Cayo Coco. From there, a pedraplén (a road built over the sea) connects Cayo Coco with Cayo Guillermo, making the land journey a scenic experience.

Once on Cayo Guillermo, most hotels offer transportation options. We recommend several ways to get to the beach:

• Taxi: This is the most comfortable and fastest option from any hotel on Cayo Guillermo or Cayo Coco. Taxis usually have fixed rates for this route.
• Tourist Bus (Gaviota Bus): A hop-on/hop-off bus service that covers all points of interest on the keys, including hotels and Playa Pilar. It's an economical and flexible option, ideal for those who wish to explore at their own pace.
• Car or Scooter Rental: For the more adventurous, renting a vehicle gives us total freedom to move around the keys and discover hidden corners. The road is safe and well-signposted.
• On Foot or by Bicycle: If we are staying in one of the hotels closest to the western tip of Cayo Guillermo, we can opt for a pleasant walk or a bike ride to reach this paradise.

The Sand and the Water

Prepare to witness one of the most spectacular combinations of sand and water we have ever seen. The sand of Playa Pilar is of an immaculate whiteness, so fine it seems like flour, and so soft it feels like silk under our feet. It is mainly composed of pulverized coral, which gives it that bright tone and freshness, even under the most intense Caribbean sun. It's the perfect setting for long barefoot walks, for building sandcastles, or simply for sinking into it and feeling its texture.

But if the sand is impressive, the water is simply magical. We encounter a sea of turquoise and aquamarine blue hues, so transparent that we can see the seabed with perfect clarity. The waters are incredibly calm and shallow, especially near the shore, making them ideal for bathing and for children to play safely. The water temperature is always pleasant, inviting us to dive in and stay for hours enjoying its coolness. It's a true open-air natural aquarium, where marine life greets us in every corner.

It's important to remember that it is not an urbanized beach with large complexes, but rather maintains a balance between tourist offerings and the conservation of its natural environment. • 'Rancho Pilar' Chiringuito: This picturesque restaurant-bar is the heart of activity on the beach. Here we can taste simple but delicious dishes of Cuban cuisine, especially fresh fish and seafood. They also offer refreshing drinks and cocktails, perfect for combating the tropical heat. It's a place with a lot of charm and a relaxed atmosphere.
• Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: For those looking to relax in the shade and enjoy the sun comfortably, palm umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent at a modest price. It's a very useful service for spending the whole day on the beach without worrying about the sun.
• Bathrooms/WC and Showers: We have basic facilities to freshen up and change clothes after a refreshing swim in the sea, which is very practical.
