How to Get to Playa de Mariel

Getting to Playa de Mariel is an integral part of the adventure and offers us a deeper perspective of Cuban geography. The beach is located in the municipality of Mariel, province of Artemisa, approximately 45-60 kilometers west of Havana. The most comfortable way to access it is undoubtedly by car. If you are coming from the capital, you can take the Vía Blanca or the Autopista Nacional heading west. The journey is relatively straightforward and well-signposted, although we always recommend having a map or GPS handy, as signs can be less frequent in some rural areas.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: This is the option we consider the most flexible. It allows you to explore not only the beach but also the surroundings of Artemisa at your own pace. There are several car rental agencies in Havana, although it is crucial to book in advance, especially during high season.
• Private Taxi: You can hire a taxi or an 'almendrón' (collective taxi in old cars) from Havana. It is a more expensive option than public transport, but it offers comfort and speed. Be sure to negotiate the price before starting the trip.
• Public Transport: For a more authentic and economical experience, you can consider public transport. From Havana, you can take a Viazul or Astro bus to the city of Artemisa, and from there, a local taxi or a 'colectivo' to Mariel. It is a slower option that requires more patience, but it allows us to interact more with the local population and observe the Cuban landscape up close. We always see it as a cultural opportunity.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Mariel welcomes us with a typical image of the Cuban Caribbean: a strip of fine, golden sand that gently extends until it meets the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sand here is of exceptional quality, soft to the touch and perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying down to sunbathe. It is sand that does not burn excessively even on the hottest days, allowing for unparalleled comfort under the Cuban sun.

But if the sand is a delight, the water is the true gem of this Artemisa beach. The waters of Playa de Mariel are remarkably calm and shallow in its first few meters, making it an ideal place for families with young children. As we have mentioned, Playa de Mariel is not a luxury destination, and its services reflect its local and authentic character. However, this does not mean it lacks the essentials to enjoy a day at the beach. We always value a place's ability to offer the basics with warmth, and Mariel more than delivers.

• Chiringuitos and food stalls: During the day, on the beach or in its immediate vicinity, there are small, improvised stalls and chiringuitos where you can purchase refreshing drinks (from water and soft drinks to the ubiquitous Cuban beer), as well as light meals. Do not expect elaborate menus, but authentic Cuban beach food: fried fish, tostones, sandwiches, or even a plate of congris rice. It is an excellent opportunity to try local cuisine at very affordable prices.
• Umbrellas and sunbeds: It is common to find small local businesses that rent umbrellas and sunbeds for a modest price. We always recommend taking advantage of this service to protect yourself from the intense Caribbean sun and enjoy greater comfort. Sometimes, these umbrellas are rustic, made with palm leaves, which adds a picturesque touch to the landscape.
• Parking: The parkin
