As beach tourism experts, we have been fortunate enough to visit countless coastal paradises around the world. However, there are places that remain etched in memory for their uniqueness and untamed beauty. Playa de Cabo Kamenjak, located at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, is undoubtedly one of those destinations. It is not a 'beach' in the traditional sense of an extensive sandy stretch, but rather a spectacular mosaic of coves, cliffs, and small inlets that extend across a protected peninsula.

This natural paradise is a landscape park that invites us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in the pure essence of the Adriatic. With its crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and emerald, its shores dotted with pebbles and rocks sculpted by time, and lush Mediterranean vegetation, Kamenjak offers a different beach experience, more connected with nature and adventure. It is a place where time seems to stand still, and the main concern becomes choosing which of its more than 30 secret coves will be our refuge for the day.

How to Get to Playa de Cabo Kamenjak

Getting to Playa de Cabo Kamenjak is part of the adventure. The peninsula is located just south of Premantura, a small and charming fishing village. If we are coming from Pula, the largest city in Istria, the drive takes about 20-30 minutes, covering some 10-12 kilometers. We highly recommend renting a car, as public transport to the park entrance is limited and, once inside, mobility is key to exploring the various coves.

Entry to the Kamenjak landscape park has a symbolic fee per vehicle, which contributes to the maintenance and protection of this valuable ecosystem. Once inside, we venture onto a network of unpaved dirt roads. These roads, although they can be a bit dusty in summer, are passable for most cars and guide us through the dense vegetation to the different access points for the coves. It is important to drive with caution, as the terrain can be uneven and there are cyclists and pedestrians sharing the road. We always advise carrying a map or using a GPS app for orientation, although the internal signage is quite clear for the most popular spots.

Transport Options

• Private or Rental Car: The most flexible and recommended option. It allows us to explore every corner at our own pace. There are numerous parking areas near the most popular coves.
• Bicycle: For cycling enthusiasts, Kamenjak is a paradise. There are marked routes and the experience of touring the peninsula by bike, stopping at every cove that catches our eye, is unparalleled. We can rent bicycles in Premantura or Pula.
• On Foot: It is possible to explore Kamenjak on foot, but given the distances between coves, it is an option more suitable for short hikes or for exploring a specific area in depth. We recommend comfortable footwear and carrying enough water.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Cabo Kamenjak, we must clarify that we are not dealing with the typical fine-sand beaches one might imagine. Here, nature surprises us with a different kind of beauty. The coves are composed mainly of pebbles of various sizes, from small, smooth stones polished by the sea to larger rocks that form small natural platforms. The ground type is predominantly pebble and rock, which gives it a wilder, more pristine character.

We found the pebbles to be surprisingly comfortable for lying on, especially if we bring a mat or thick towel. Furthermore, they have the advantage of not sticking to the body like sand, which makes cleaning up much easier when leaving the water. For our feet, we recommend wearing water shoes or neoprene booties, as the rocks can be slippery and the stones can be somewhat sharp in some areas, especially when entering and exiting the sea.

But if there is one thing that defines the water of Kamenjak, it is its immaculate transparency and purity. The Adriatic waters here are an intense blue that transforms into a bright turquoise in shallower areas. This exceptional clarity is due, in part, to the absence of fine suspended sand, allowing us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. It is a true gift for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, as the underwater visibility is fantastic and invites us to discover the rich marine life that inhabits these coasts.

The Most Notable Coves

• Mala Kolombarica: Famous for its spectacular cliffs from where the bravest jump into the sea. It also has an accessible sea cave by swimming.
• Velika Kolombarica: Right next door, it offers a similar landscape and equally impressive waters.
• Njive: One of the largest and most popular coves, with easier access and some nearby services.
• Pinizule: Ideal for families, with calmer waters and a gradual entry into the sea.
• Radovanjica: Known for its relaxed atmosphere and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Services and Facilities

As a protected landscape park, Playa de Cabo Kamenjak maintains a delicate balance between providing services for visitors and conserving its natural environment. We appreciate that the infrastructure is not excessive, which helps preserve its wild and authentic character. However, there are enough facilities to ensure a comfortable and pleasant visit.
