How to Get to Playa Santa Teresa

Getting to Playa Santa Teresa is part of the adventure and often an experience in itself that immerses us in the scenic beauty of Costa Rica. Given its location at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, there are several options, each with its own charm and level of convenience. It's important to plan ahead, especially during the high season.

International Flights

Most international travelers land at two main airports:

• Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José.
• Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste.

Transportation Options from the Airports

1. Domestic Flight + Taxi: This is the fastest option. From SJO, we can take a short flight (approximately 25-30 minutes) with local airlines like Sansa or Aerobell to Tambor Airport (TMU). Once in Tambor, a taxi or private transport service will take us to Santa Teresa in about 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. It's a spectacular way to see the peninsula from the air.

2. Ferry + Rental Car/Bus/Shuttle: This is one of the most popular and picturesque routes if we're coming from San José or its surroundings. We drive (or take a bus/shuttle) to Puntarenas (approximately 2-3 hours from San José). From the port of Puntarenas, we take the Naviera Tambor company ferry to Paquera. The ferry ride lasts about 70-90 minutes, offering impressive views of the bay and often the chance to see dolphins. Once in Paquera, the road trip to Playa Santa Teresa is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, through roads that can be a bit rough (mostly gravel, not paved) and full of wildlife. We recommend a 4x4 if we rent a car, especially in the rainy season.

3. Private or Shared Shuttle: Numerous companies offer direct transport services from SJO, LIR, or San José to Santa Teresa. They are comfortable, often include the ferry ticket, and allow us to relax and enjoy the scenery. Shared shuttles are more economical, while private ones offer greater flexibility.

4. Rental Car (full land route): Although it's possible to drive the entire way without taking the ferry (via the route through Tempisque and Nicoya), it's a much longer journey (5-7 hours from SJO) and road conditions can be more challenging in certain sections. The ferry option is generally preferred for its efficiency and charm. It's always advisable to check road conditions, especially in the rainy season, and opt for a 4x4 vehicle for peace of mind.
