How to Get to Playa San Josecito

The journey to Playa San Josecito is, in itself, part of the adventure and prepares us for the wonder that awaits. It is not a beach easily reached by car, and that is precisely what contributes to its wild charm. For us, the most common and exciting route begins with a domestic flight from San José to Palmar Sur. From there, we take a taxi to the small town of Sierpe, a key starting point for the Osa Peninsula.

Boat Trip on the Sierpe River

In Sierpe, we board a boat that takes us through the winding Sierpe River, a fascinating journey through dense mangroves and a vibrant ecosystem where we can spot exotic birds, crocodiles, and monkeys. This river journey flows into the vast Pacific Ocean, and from there, the boat takes us along the coast to Drake Bay. Arriving at Drake Bay, often landing directly on the beach, is a memorable experience in itself, with the rainforest stretching right to the shoreline.

From Drake Bay to San Josecito

Once in Drake Bay, Playa San Josecito is a short distance away. We usually opt for a short boat ride, which many of the area's lodges offer as part of their tours, or, for the more adventurous, a hike along coastal trails that allow us to admire the local flora and fauna. It is a journey that immerses us even deeper in nature, preparing us for the tranquility and beauty of the beach. We love the tranquility of its waves; they are generally gentle and calm, making it an ideal place for swimming and for children to enjoy safely. The water temperature is warm and welcoming year-round, allowing for a prolonged swim without feeling cold. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it perfect for snorkeling, allowing us to observe the vibrant marine life that inhabits its nearby reefs.

Services and Facilities

For us, one of the most distinctive features of Playa San Josecito is its almost virgin nature. Unlike other more urbanized Costa Rica beaches, here we will not find a profusion of services and facilities directly on the sand. And to be honest, that is precisely what we value about it. There are no chiringuitos, no umbrella and sunbed rental stands, no public showers. Its beauty lies in its simplicity and in the fact that it remains mostly untouched by human hands.

However, this does not mean we are completely helpless. We always recommend that visitors plan their day in advance. The lodges and tour operators in Drake Bay usually provide everything needed: from snorkeling and kayak equipment to drinks and picnic-style lunches to take to the beach. The guides who accompany us on excursions are often trained in first aid, acting as a form of informal lifeguarding. The experience at Playa San Josecito is one of total immersion in nature, where we bring the comfort and the environment gifts us the adventure.

Best Time to Visit

Our experience tells us that the choice of time to visit Playa San Josecito depends largely on what we are looking for in our adventure. Costa Rica has two main seasons, and both offer unique experiences on this Puntarenas beach.

The Dry Season (December to April)

Considered by many as the best time to visit, the dry season gifts us sunny days and clear skies. The chances of rain are minimal, guaranteeing optimal conditions for enjoying the beach, swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the surroundings. The waters are usually calmer and visibility for diving and snorkeling is excellent.
