How to Get to Playa Biesanz

Getting to Playa Biesanz is part of the adventure and what keeps it as a relatively 'hidden' gem. It is strategically located between the city of Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, in the province of Puntarenas. Generally, we recommend flying into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José and from there taking a domestic flight of approximately 25 minutes to Quepos (La Managua Airport, XQP), or opting for a ground transfer that takes about 3-4 hours, depending on traffic.

Once in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area, access to Playa Biesanz is what adds a special touch. There is no direct road that ends at the sand. The most common way to get there is to park your vehicle in the paid parking lot of a nearby hotel (like the Parador Resort & Spa Hotel) or in one of the small improvised parking spots along the main road (Route 618) leading to Manuel Antonio National Park. From there, you must embark on a 10-15 minute walk along a somewhat steep and winding trail that descends through dense tropical vegetation to the beach. This path, although short, can be slippery if it has rained, so we advise wearing comfortable and secure footwear.

Access Tips:

• Parking: Look for 'Parking' signs or ask the locals. Some hotels allow access to their parking for a fee.
• Footwear: Sneakers or sandals with good grip are ideal for the trail.
• Timing: It's best to go in the morning to enjoy the tranquility and avoid peak hours. Low tide is the optimal time to explore the beach in its entirety.
• Light luggage: Since you have to walk, we recommend bringing only the essentials: towels, sunscreen, water, and some snacks.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa Biesanz begins with the sand. When setting foot in this cove, we find incredibly fine sand of a light golden color, almost white in some sections, which contrasts wonderfully with the intense green of the surrounding vegetation. It's soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying down and feeling the warmth under the tropical sun. At the ends of the cove, you can find some rock formations, which add character to the landscape and are a good place to observe marine life during low tide, but the predominant type of ground is, without a doubt, pure sand.

But what truly defines Playa Biesanz and elevates it to paradise status are its waters. They are simply spectacular! We're talking about calm, incredibly clear waters of a captivating turquoise hue that invites you to dive right in. The cove is protected from the large Pacific waves by rock formations and the shape of the bay, creating a giant natural pool. This means currents are minimal and the waves are gentle, almost non-existent, making it an exceptionally safe place to swim, even for young children or people who don't feel very comfortable in the open sea.

The water temperature is another of its great attractions: always warm and pleasant, allowing for prolonged swims without feeling cold. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it perfect for snorkeling, especially near the rocks where you can spot colorful fish, starfish, and other marine wonders. We are always amazed by how crystal clear they are, allowing us to see our own feet even several meters deep. It is, in short, a watery oasis that invites us to relax and enjoy the underwater beauty of Puntarenas.
