How to Get to Playa Puerto Viejo

Getting to Playa Puerto Viejo, one of the most iconic beaches in Limón, Costa Rica, is part of the adventure. From San José, the capital, we have several options to embark on this journey to the heart of the Caribbean:

By Car

Driving is one of the most popular ways and gives us flexibility to explore the surroundings. The journey takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. We will take Route 32 (Braulio Carrillo Highway) which crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park, offering spectacular landscapes, although it can also be prone to fog and rain. It's important to drive with caution, especially on this mountainous route. Once we reach Limón, we will continue south on Route 36 directly to Puerto Viejo.

By Bus

It's the most economical option and allows us to relax and enjoy the scenery. The MEPE company offers direct services from the Caribbean Terminal in San José to Puerto Viejo. The buses are comfortable and the trip takes about 5-6 hours, with intermediate stops. We recommend buying tickets in advance, especially during high season.

Shuttles and Private Taxis

For those seeking greater comfort and speed, there are shared shuttle services and private taxis. These pick us up directly at our hotel or at San José airport and take us to Puerto Viejo. The trip is shorter (about 4 hours) and, although more expensive than the bus, can be worth it for the convenience, especially if we are traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage.

The Sand and Water

The sand at Playa Puerto Viejo is a fascinating mix. Predominantly light golden in color, we often find small shells and coral fragments that give it a unique texture, classifying it as mixed sand. It's not as fine as that of other beaches, but it's pleasant to the touch and perfect for long walks. In some sections, especially near the town, there may be areas with rocks and coral formations, which is ideal for those who enjoy marine exploration in the tide pools that form at low tide.

• Parking: We will find several parking options, both on the street (often informal with local 'car watchers') and in paid private parking lots, especially near restaurants and shops in the center. We recommend opting for private ones for greater security.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The gastronomic offering is one of the strong points. Along the coast and in the town, there are a large number of chiringuitos, bars, and restaurants serving everything from authentic Caribbean food to international options. We can enjoy a delicious 'rice and beans' by the sea.
• Lifeguards: During high season and in the most popular areas, it's common to find lifeguards, especially on nearby beaches like Playa Cocles, which is more suitable for swimming. On the main Puerto Viejo beach, surveillance may be more limited, so caution is key.
• Umbrellas and Sunbeds: Many establishments by the sea offer umbrella and sunbed rentals, allowing us to relax comfortably under the Caribbean sun.
• Bathrooms/WC: While there are no public bathrooms directly on the beach, most nearby restaurants and bars have facilities for their customers.
