As experts in international beach tourism, we are always looking for destinations that promise not only beauty but also an authentic and vibrant experience. And if there is one place in the Costa Rican Caribbean that perfectly embodies this duality, it is undoubtedly Playa Cocles, located in the province of Limón, Costa Rica.

This paradise corner is much more than just a stretch of sand; it is a meeting point for surf lovers, seekers of Caribbean peace, and explorers of a rich and colorful culture. When one thinks of Costa Rican beaches, white sands and palm trees often come to mind. Playa Cocles more than fulfills this idyllic image, but adds a distinctive touch: its waves. Internationally known as an excellent surf spot, this beach attracts surfers of all levels, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced wave riders.

But Cocles is not just about surfing; its long stretch of golden sand, bathed by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, also offers ample space for relaxation, contemplation, and family enjoyment. It is a destination that invites us to disconnect, to immerse ourselves in the lush nature, and to be carried away by the slow and contagious rhythm of the Caribbean.

How to Get to Playa Cocles

Getting to Playa Cocles is an exciting part of the adventure. Located just a few kilometers south of the popular town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, in the province of Limón, access is relatively straightforward, although it requires a bit of planning, especially if we are coming from outside the country.

From San José

The most common route for most international visitors is to fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, we have several options:

• Rental car: This is the option we most recommend if we want total freedom to explore the area. The trip from San José to Playa Cocles takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and stops. The main route is Highway 32, which passes through Braulio Carrillo National Park, offering spectacular landscapes, though sometimes with fog and rain. Once in Limón city, we continue south on the Costanera (Route 36), passing through Cahuita and Puerto Viejo until reaching Cocles. It is a generally well-maintained road, but we recommend driving with caution, especially on the mountainous and curvy sections.
• Public bus: For budget travelers or those who prefer not to drive, there are direct buses from the Caribbean Terminal in San José to Puerto Viejo. Companies like MEPE offer several departures per day. The journey takes about 5 hours. Once in Puerto Viejo, we can take a taxi, a 'colectivo' (shared taxi), rent a bicycle, or even walk to Playa Cocles, which is only about 2-3 kilometers away.
• Shuttle service: There are numerous private or shared shuttle companies that offer direct transfers from the airport or any point in San José to hotels in the Cocles and Puerto Viejo area. They are more comfortable than the bus and don't require the worry of driving, although they are more expensive.

From Limón Airport

If we are lucky enough to fly directly into Limón International Airport (LIO), the trip to Playa Cocles is much shorter, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours by car or taxi heading south on Route 36.

Getting Around the Area

Once in Cocles or Puerto Viejo, getting around is quite simple. Bicycles are the preferred mode of transport for many, and there are numerous places to rent them. There are also taxis and 'colectivos' (shared taxis) that constantly travel along the main road connecting the towns and the beaches of Limón. We always advise enjoying a bike ride to soak up the Caribbean atmosphere.

The Sand and Water

When we set foot on Playa Cocles, the first thing we notice is its distinctive sand. It is not the fine white sand of some postcards, but sand with a golden hue, with a texture we would describe as mixed: not excessively fine, which sticks to everything, nor too coarse, which is uncomfortable to walk on. It is perfect sand for building castles, for laying out our towel, and for feeling connected to nature. Along its approximately 2.5 kilometers of length, the sand remains clean and well-maintained, reflecting the local commitment to conservation, something we value immensely.

The beach floor is predominantly sand, which facilitates access to the sea and enjoyment of its waters. We won't find large rocky formations that make swimming difficult, although, as with any natural beach, it is advisable to pay attention to tides and currents.

As for the water, Playa Cocles has the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Its temperature is always pleasant, inviting a refreshing swim at any time of the day. However, it is important to note that, due to its popularity as a surf destination, the waves can be considerable, especially at certain times of the year. This makes it an exciting place for adventure lovers, but requires caution for those not used to currents or traveling with small children. We always recommend checking sea conditions and respecting the instructions of lifeguards, who are usually present in the busier areas. Underwater visibility is good, allowing us to appreciate marine life in the calmer areas, although it is not a primary snorkeling destination due to the waves.
