How to Get to Playa Manzanillo

Getting to Playa Manzanillo in Guanacaste is part of the adventure, and the journey itself immerses us in the scenic beauty of Costa Rica. The beach is located on the Nicoya Peninsula, near the popular destinations of Santa Teresa and Malpaís, making it accessible, though requiring a bit of planning.

From Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José

If we fly into the country's main airport, SJO, we have several options. The most common is to rent a car. The road trip from San José to Manzanillo can take between 4 and 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. We recommend taking Route 27 towards the Pacific coast, then turning onto Route 1 (Carretera Interamericana Norte) and, finally, Route 18 to cross the Puente de la Amistad over the Tempisque River. From there, we'll follow Route 21 and then Route 160, which will take us through picturesque towns like Cóbano before reaching Manzanillo. It's important to know that Route 160, especially in the rainy season, may have gravel sections that require a 4x4 vehicle, although in the dry season a normal car with good ground clearance may be sufficient.

Another popular option from SJO is to take a domestic flight. Several local airlines offer short flights from San José to Tambor Airport (TMU), which is only about a 45-minute drive from Playa Manzanillo. These flights are an excellent way to save time and enjoy spectacular aerial views of the coast and mountains. Once in Tambor, we can rent a car or take a taxi to our final destination. There are also shared or private shuttle services operating from SJO that take us directly to the Santa Teresa/Manzanillo area, a comfortable option if we prefer not to drive.

For many travelers visiting Guanacaste, Liberia airport (LIR) is the most convenient gateway. From LIR, the trip to Playa Manzanillo is a bit shorter, generally between 3 and 4 hours. As from San José, the best option is to rent a car. From the airport, we'll take Route 21 south, passing through cities like Nicoya and Jicaral, until we reach Paquera, where we can take the ferry to Puntarenas if we want to explore other areas or simply enjoy the crossing. However, to go directly to Manzanillo, we'll continue on Route 21 and then Route 160. The road is similar to the one coming from San José in its final stretch, with the same considerations about the type of vehicle, especially if we travel in the green season.

Regardless of the route we choose, the journey to Playa Manzanillo offers us an authentic view of Costa Rican rural life, with changing landscapes ranging from cattle fields to dense jungles. We recommend planning the arrival during the day, as the roads are not always well-lit and can be challenging at night. But don't worry! The reward at the end of the road, this spectacular Guanacaste beach, is worth every kilometer traveled.
