Introduction
If there is a corner in Menorca that embodies the essence of wild beauty and absolute serenity, that is, without a doubt, Cala Trebalúger. This wonderful cove, nestled on the south coast of the island, between the municipalities of Es Mercadal and Ferreries, is a true treasure for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the purest nature. We, as experts on the beaches of the Balearic Islands, always recommend Trebalúger to those travelers who yearn for an authentic experience and a deep connection with the sea.
Cala Trebalúger is one of those Balearic beaches that wins your heart with its simplicity and stunning landscape. Its crystal-clear waters in turquoise hues and its brilliant white sand, flanked by pine trees that reach almost to the shore, create an idyllic picture that seems taken from a postcard. Here, time stands still, and the only sound that accompanies us is the gentle murmur of the waves and the song of the birds. It is a place where the effort to get there is amply rewarded by the peace and beauty that await us.
How to get to Cala Trebalúger
The access to Cala Trebalúger is part of its charm and, at the same time, what keeps it so pristine and uncrowded. Don't expect to drive right up to the sand; here, the adventure begins with a good walk. We always recommend planning the route well and wearing comfortable shoes, as well as bringing enough water and provisions, since you won't find any services at the cove.
Walking route from Cala Galdana
The most popular option to reach Trebalúger is via the famous Camí de Cavalls. You can leave your car in the large parking lot at Cala Galdana. From there, take the trail heading east, following the signs for GR-223. The path is relatively easy, although with some ups and downs, and will take approximately 45-60 minutes of walking through a beautiful Mediterranean forest. You'll pass by Cala Mitjana (and its little sister, Mitjaneta) before reaching your destination. It's a scenic journey that prepares you for the wonder that awaits.
Walking route from Cala Mitjana (parking)
Another alternative is to park in the designated parking for Cala Mitjana, which is a bit closer to Trebalúger than Cala Galdana. From this parking lot, the walk to Cala Mitjana is about 15-20 minutes, and from there, continue along the Camí de Cavalls for another 20-30 minutes until you reach Cala Trebalúger. This option slightly reduces the total walking time, but it's still a considerable walk that requires good physical condition and preparation.
The sand and the water
The Cala Trebalúger beach is a spectacle for the senses, and much of its appeal lies in its natural elements. The sand is of an immaculate, fine whiteness, so soft that you'll want to walk barefoot on it. It contrasts spectacularly with the intense blue of the sea and the green of the surrounding pine trees, creating a vibrant color palette that is a delight for the eyes. This sand, of coral origin, contributes to the exceptional clarity of the water.
As for the water, it is simply sublime. Of a translucent turquoise color, it immediately invites you to dive in. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it very pleasant for swimming. Furthermore, being sheltered by cliffs and vegetation, it usually remains calm and tranquil, even on days with a light breeze. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling, where you can observe the rich marine life that inhabits its nearby rocky seabeds.
Services and facilities
This is where we must be very clear: Cala Trebalúger is a wild beach in the purest sense of the word, and this means it completely lacks services and facilities. You won't find showers, beach bars (chiringuitos), lifeguards, toilets, or umbrella and sunbed rentals. It is precisely this absence of infrastructure that preserves its natural beauty and pristine atmosphere.
We always advise visitors to come prepared for self-sufficiency. This includes bringing:- Enough drinking water and refreshing beverages
- Food and snacks for the day
- A sun umbrella or parasol to protect yourself from the sun
- High-protection sunscreen
- A hat or visor and sunglasses
- Bags to collect all your trash and take it back with you, leaving the cove exactly as you found it.
Best time to visit
To fully enjoy the serenity and beauty of Cala Trebalúger, we highly recommend visiting outside the peak season months (July and August). During these months, although it remains less crowded than other more accessible coves, the number of people is higher and the heat can make the walk more demanding.
Our favorite time to go is:- Late spring (May and early June): The weather is warm but not stifling, the water is starting to be delightful for swimming, and nature is in full bloom. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is notably lower, allowing you to enjoy the cove with almost exclusive tranquility.
- Early autumn (September and early October): Temperatures remain very pleasant, the sea water retains the summer's warmth, and the crowds have almost completely dissipated. It's an ideal time for those seeking a relaxing getaway and to enjoy the peace offered by this Es Mercadal/Ferreries beach.
