How to get to Cala Montjoi

Getting to Cala Montjoi is part of the adventure and the experience that makes it so special. From Roses, access is via a winding and somewhat narrow road that runs through the Cap de Creus Natural Park. It is a journey of about 20-30 minutes by car, depending on traffic and our driving skill, but each curve gives us panoramic views that prepare us for the beauty that awaits.

We highly recommend going by private car, as public transport is very limited. There is a parking lot, although with reduced capacity, especially in high season, so we advise arriving early. For the more adventurous or those who want a different experience, in the summer months water taxis usually operate from the port of Roses, offering a unique and scenic way to access the cove, allowing us to enjoy the coast from another perspective. Remember that we are in a natural park, so we must be respectful of the environment and follow conservation guidelines.

The sand and the water

The beach of Cala Montjoi welcomes us with a charming mix of coarse sand and pebbles, or what we call a 'mixed type of ground'. This combination, although perhaps not the typical fine sand of a postcard, gives it a unique character and a water transparency that is simply astonishing. The stones, polished by the sea, mix with the sand, creating a seabed ideal for underwater life.

The waters of Cala Montjoi are, without a doubt, its greatest attraction. They are crystal clear, of an intense turquoise color and with a pleasant temperature in the summer months, perfect for a refreshing swim. The clarity of the water is such that, even without diving goggles, we can observe the seabed and the fauna that inhabits it. It is a true paradise for snorkeling, where visibility is exceptional and marine biodiversity invites us to explore its corners.

Given its character as a semi-wild cove within a natural park, the services at Cala Montjoi are more limited than in large urban beaches, which, for us, is part of its charm. Do not expect large complexes or a profusion of shops, but the essentials to enjoy nature.

• Parking: As mentioned, there is a parking area, although its capacity is limited and can fill up quickly in high season.
• Chiringuitos: During the summer months, there is usually a chiringuito or bar service where we can have a cool drink or enjoy a simple meal with sea views. It is important to check availability, as it may vary.
• Lifeguards: During the bathing season, the cove has a lifeguard service to ensure our safety, an important point to consider, especially if we are with children.
• Restaurant/Hotel: The famous space that housed El Bulli now operates as the elBulliFoundation, a culinary innovation center that also offers accommodation and services, although with a very particular focus. This adds a touch of exclusivity and an option for those seeking a high-level gastronomic experience in a privileged setting.

Best time to visit

To fully enjoy the tranquility and beauty of Cala Montjoi, we consider that the best time to visit is spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-early October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, the waters are already warm enough for a swim, and the influx of tourists is significantly lower than in the middle of summer.

If our only option is summer, we recommend avoiding the second half of July and, above all, the month of August, when the Costa Brava is at its peak occupancy. Although at Cala Montjoi the atmosphere is always more relaxed than in more urban beaches, the access road and parking can be more congested. Outside the high season, the cove regains its more intimate and wild atmosphere, ideal for lovers of peace and nature.
