We, as beach tourism enthusiasts, have always had a special affection for these places that resist mass tourism, and Cala Jóncols is the perfect example of that.

Upon arriving at Cala Jóncols, one feels they have discovered a well-kept secret. Its impressively turquoise blue waters, its seabed rich in life, and its rugged rocky surroundings, covered by the characteristic vegetation of Cap de Creus, transport us to a world where time seems to stand still. It is not a typical beach, one of those with large infrastructures and promenades; it is, rather, a natural sanctuary, a canvas where the sea and land meet in perfect harmony. For diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, this cove is a true treasure, offering exceptional visibility and marine biodiversity that few beaches can match. But beyond water activities, Cala Jóncols is a place to simply be, to breathe pure air, and to enjoy the peace that only pristine nature can offer.

How to Get to Cala Jóncols

The path to Cala Jóncols is, in itself, an adventure and part of its charm. This cove is not one of those easily reached by a wide, paved road; its access requires a bit more effort, which helps maintain its semi-wild and less crowded character. We always recommend taking it as an opportunity to enjoy the landscape and the anticipation.

Road Access

From Roses, the journey is about 15 kilometers and is done on a winding road, partly unpaved and with dirt sections, that snakes through the Cap de Creus Natural Park. It is a spectacular route, with breathtaking panoramic views, but it requires driving with caution and at low speed. We suggest doing it with a suitable vehicle and being prepared for the adventure. From Cadaqués, the access is similar, although perhaps a bit shorter in distance, but equally demanding in terms of road quality. Once we arrive, we will find a parking lot (often associated with the hotel/restaurant), although spaces are limited, especially in high season.

Access by Sea

For many, the most idyllic way to reach Cala Jóncols is by sea. Numerous tourist boats and water taxis offer excursions from Roses or Cadaqués, allowing you to admire the spectacular Cap de Creus coastline from a unique perspective. This option is ideal for those who prefer to avoid the road and enjoy a relaxing sea ride. Furthermore, it's a perfect way to arrive directly at the shore and enjoy the cove without parking worries. For the more adventurous, kayaking or paddleboarding from nearby coves are also fantastic options, although they require good physical fitness and experience.

Access on Foot

Hiking lovers also have their reward. Cala Jóncols is accessible via various hiking trails that run through Cap de Creus, such as the famous GR 92. These trails offer spectacular views and the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the park's flora and fauna. However, these are not routes to improvise; they require good footwear, enough water, and being accustomed to walking on uneven terrain. We consider this one of the most rewarding ways to arrive, as the reward of the cove at the end of the path feels even greater.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about the beach experience, the quality of the sand and water are paramount factors, and at Cala Jóncols, both elements gift us unique sensations. We always emphasize that it is not a typical beach of fine, golden sand; rather, its character is much more authentic and in tune with its surroundings.

The Sand

The type of sand at Cala Jóncols is what we would describe as coarse sand mixed with small pebbles or stones. The ground, therefore, is of a mixed type. This gives it a particular texture underfoot, different from more urban beaches. It's not the beach for building elaborate sandcastles, but it is for enjoying the natural feel of stones polished by the sea. The advantage of this type of ground is that the water usually stays cleaner and clearer, as the sand is not suspended as easily by wave movement. Furthermore, the color of the sand, with gray and ochre tones, contrasts wonderfully with the intense blue of the Mediterranean, creating a postcard-worthy color palette.

The Water

This is where Cala Jóncols truly shines. The waters are simply spectacular: crystal clear, of a turquoise blue color that irresistibly invites you for a swim. The underwater visibility is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving. We have had the opportunity to dive in many beaches, but the transparency of Cala Jóncols is something that always surprises us. This is largely due to its location within the Cap de Creus Natural Park, a protected area where water quality is a priority, and the absence of strong currents that stir up sediment.

When venturing into the sea, we will notice that the depth increases somewhat quickly, which is ideal for swimming and underwater activities, but is something to consider if going with small children (although we will delve deeper into this aspect later). The
