How to Get to Cala Gran

Getting to Cala Gran beach is relatively straightforward, given its location in the well-developed tourist area of Cala d'Or. If arriving by car from Palma de Mallorca, the journey takes about an hour on good roads, following signs to Santanyí and then to Cala d'Or. Once in Cala d'Or, the cove is well signposted and forms part of the urban centre.

Parking

In the immediate vicinity of Cala Gran, especially during the high season, finding parking can be a challenge. There are regulated parking zones (blue zones) on nearby streets and some paid public car parks. We always recommend arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot, or considering public transport if staying in the surrounding area. The advantage of being within Cala d'Or is that many accommodations are within easy walking distance.

Public Transport

The town of Cala d'Or has a good bus network connecting it to other parts of Santanyí, Manacor, and the capital, Palma. The TIB (Transport de les Illes Balears) bus lines operate regularly, especially during the summer season. If staying in central Cala d'Or or a nearby hotel, you can reach the cove on foot in just a few minutes, which is a great advantage and a sustainable way to get around.

The Sand and Water

The first thing that captivates us when stepping onto Cala Gran is the quality of its sand. It is a fine, golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot, inviting you to lay out a towel and enjoy a day of relaxation. It's perfect for children to build sandcastles and for barefoot walks along the shoreline, feeling the sea breeze.

The waters of Cala Gran are simply spectacular. Their crystal-clear turquoise colour is an irresistible invitation for a swim. The cove is well protected from wind and waves, resulting in very calm, shallow waters at the shore, ideal for young children. Visibility is excellent, making it a fantastic spot for snorkelling and observing the marine life hidden among the rocks and Posidonia oceanica seagrass in areas further from the shore. We have spent hours enjoying the calm and clarity of these waters, which are one of the main reasons this beach holds the Blue Flag award.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: There is a good number of sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, allowing us to relax comfortably without having to carry our own equipment. This is a highly valued service, especially on busier days.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: It has showers to rinse off salt and sand before heading back to the hotel, as well as public toilets, always a plus for hygiene and comfort.
• Chiringuitos (Beach Bars): Several chiringuitos and restaurants are located on the beach itself or nearby, offering everything from refreshments and ice creams to more elaborate meals. They are perfect for a snack in the shade or enjoying a paella with sea views.
• Equipment Rental: It is possible to rent water scooters, kayaks, and other equipment to enjoy water activities, adding a touch of fun to our beach day.
• Parking: As mentioned, although it can be busy, there are parking options nearby.
