How to Get to Playa de Lukova

Getting to Playa de Lukova is, in itself, part of the adventure and an experience that gifts us with unforgettable landscapes. We always recommend renting a car to explore the Albanian Riviera, and Lukova is no exception. The main road connecting Vlora with Saranda, the SH8, is a scenic coastal route that winds through mountains and cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Ionian Sea that will take our breath away. From Vlora, the journey takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic and the mandatory stops to admire the landscape, especially when crossing the famous Llogara Pass, a high point offering spectacular views.

If we're coming from Saranda, the southernmost city of the Riviera, the trip is somewhat shorter, around 45 minutes to an hour. The road is equally picturesque, running along the coast and passing through charming fishing villages and other beaches. It's important to consider that Albanian roads, although they have improved significantly in recent years, can be narrow and winding in some sections, so it's crucial to drive cautiously and enjoy the journey. The final stretch to descend to Lukova beach is usually a secondary road that can be a bit steep and with tight curves, but the effort is worth it.

Public transport to Lukova is more limited and less convenient. There are buses or 'furgonë' (minibuses) that connect major coastal cities like Vlora and Saranda, but they usually don't have direct stops at Lukova beach. Most likely, they will drop us off on the main road, from where we would have to walk or try to find a local taxi for the final descent. For this reason, we insist that a rental car is the most practical and flexible option to discover not only Lukova, but also all the wonders that the Vlora region and the Albanian Riviera have to offer. Furthermore, most accommodations in Lukova and its surroundings offer parking, making this option even easier.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Lukova, the first image that comes to mind is its waters, of astonishing transparency. We were amazed by the clarity of the Ionian Sea in this part of Albania; it's an intense turquoise blue that blends with the horizon. Underwater visibility is exceptional, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life and the rocky seabed with total clarity. The water temperature is pleasantly warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours swimming and cooling off under the Albanian sun.

As for the 'sand' of Lukova, we must be honest: it's not a fine, golden sand beach in the Caribbean style. Playa de Lukova is characterized by a mix of small polished pebbles and coarser sand, with pebbles predominating in many of its sections. These pebbles are smooth to the touch and very pleasant to walk on, although we always recommend bringing water shoes or aqua sandals, especially for the little ones, as they make entering and exiting the sea easier and protect feet from the sun's heat and possible larger stones. This mixed composition of the seabed contributes to the exceptional clarity of the water, as fine sand isn't stirred up by the wave movement.

The type of beach surface, a combination of sand and pebble, gives it a unique character and rustic appeal. The coves adjacent to the main Lukova beach also share this characteristic, offering even more secluded corners where pebbles are the protagonists. The cleanliness of the beach is notable, and the sound of the small waves breaking on the pebbles is a natural melody that accompanies our hours of relaxation. For us, the combination of these pristine waters and the particular texture of its shore is what truly defines the experience at Playa de Lukova and distinguishes it.
