Introduction
As we venture into the majestic Albanian Riviera, we find a hidden treasure that invites us to disconnect and enjoy pure relaxation: Playa de Livadhi. Located in the Vlora region, though geographically closer to the charming town of Himara, this beach is undoubtedly one of the pearls that Albania offers us. With its distinctive combination of white pebbles and impressively turquoise blue waters, Livadhi promises an unforgettable experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds but with all the comforts we could wish for.
We, as beach tourism experts, have explored countless coasts around the world, and we can affirm that Livadhi possesses a special magic. Its serene atmosphere, its picture-postcard landscapes, and the warmth of its people make it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation, natural beauty, and an authentic immersion in Albanian culture. It is one of those Vlora beaches that, once visited, remain in our memory as a vivid recollection of coastal perfection.
How to Get to Playa de Livadhi
Getting to Playa de Livadhi is part of the adventure and charm of this destination. Although administratively it belongs to Vlora, its most direct access and feeling of proximity place it within the orbit of Himara. We always recommend planning the trip in advance to make the most of the panoramic views offered by the coastal road.
From Tirana
If your starting point is the capital, Tirana, you have several options. The most common is to drive or take a bus to Vlora, which will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Once in Vlora, the journey continues south on the famous SH8, the Albanian coastal road. This stretch, known as the Llogara Pass, is spectacular, with sharp curves and breathtaking views, although it requires caution when driving. The total trip from Tirana to Livadhi can range from 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and the stops you make to admire the landscape.
From Vlora
From the city of Vlora, the route is direct via SH8. It's approximately 70 kilometers of mountain road, winding along the coast. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car, offering unparalleled coastal landscapes. Local buses also operate on this route, although with less flexible schedules and longer travel times. We, if you have a rental car, always opt for the freedom it gives us to stop at viewpoints and small coastal towns like Dhermi or Jale.
From Himara
For us, the simplest and fastest way to access Livadhi is from Himara. The Vlora beach of Livadhi is located just 3-4 kilometers north of Himara's center. You can reach it by car in less than 10 minutes, or even take a pleasant walk, although the initial climb can be a bit demanding under the sun. During the high season, small taxis and local minibuses (furgons) usually offer frequent transfers between Himara and Livadhi, which greatly facilitates mobility if you don't have your own vehicle.
Nearby Airports
The nearest international airport is Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA). From there, as mentioned, you can rent a car or take a bus. Another option, if traveling from Greece, is to fly to Corfu Airport and take a ferry to Saranda, and from there continue by car or bus north, passing through Ksamil and Butrint, until reaching Livadhi. This last option is longer but allows you to explore another fascinating part of the Albanian beaches.
The Sand and Water
The particularity of Playa de Livadhi lies in its composition and the impressive transparency of its waters. When we talk about 'sand', in Livadhi we are referring more to a mix of fine and coarse pebbles, of a pearly white color that contrasts wonderfully with the intense blue of the sea. This characteristic distinguishes it from many other Vlora beaches that may have finer sand, and gives it a rustic and natural charm that we love.
The Pebbles
The pebbles of Livadhi are not the typical large, uncomfortable cobblestones. They are mostly small and polished by the sea, making them quite pleasant to walk on, although we always recommend wearing sandals or water shoes for greater comfort, especially for the little ones or for those planning to spend a lot of time in the water. The light tone of these pebbles contributes to the beach's luminosity and the feeling of cleanliness that we value so much.
The Water Clarity
But if there's something that truly captivates us about Livadhi, it's the incredible transparency of its waters. The turquoise color is so vibrant it seems unreal, and the visibility is exceptional, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving lovers. We have spent hours exploring the seabed, observing small fish and aquatic life hiding among the rocks. The absence of fine suspended sand is key to this clarity, allowing sunlight to penetrate deeply and reveal the underwater beauty. It is, without a doubt, one of the cleanest waters we have found on the Albanian beaches.
Water Temperatures
During the summer months, from June to September, the water temperature is ideal for swimming, ranging between 22°C and 26°C. This makes it perfect for long days of swimming and for children to enjoy without worries. Even in the shoulder seasons, like May or early October, the sea can be warm enough for a refreshing dip, although the air already feels cooler. It's a pleasure to immerse yourself in these waters and feel the purity and freshness they emanate.
